Question 2

Does KDP need an ISBN barcode?

Accepted Answer

No, KDP adds an ISBN barcode to your back cover for free if your cover has none.

If you add your own, KDP asks for about 2″ × 1.2″, 100% black on white, at least 0.25″ from the spine and trim.

Question 3

What does the 5-digit number next to an ISBN barcode mean?

Accepted Answer

The 5-digit number next to an ISBN barcode is the price add-on: the first digit is the currency (5 for US dollars) and the next 4 are the price, so 52495 means $24.95.

Question 4

What does 90000 mean on a book barcode?

Accepted Answer

90000 on a book barcode means no suggested price is encoded.

Stores then look the price up in their own systems.

Question 5

How do I put a price over $99.99 in an ISBN barcode?

Accepted Answer

A US price from $100.00 to $499.99 goes in the add-on as 10000 to 49999, so $124.95 is 12495, under the Book Industry Study Group's rules since 2004.

59999 means a price over $99.98 that isn't encoded.
