What is social freedom? How to choose the people in your life

Social freedom means choosing who you spend your time with: people who inspire, challenge and elevate you. Here's how I think about it.

What is social freedom? How to choose the people in your life

Social freedom is the last of my 7 freedoms, and maybe the one that decides how the others feel.

It means choosing who you spend your time with. The people who inspire you, challenge you and elevate you, and the courage to spend less time with the ones who don't.

@thenavidm

Social freedom isn’t about having lots of friends. It’s about having the right ones.

The people you surround yourself with will determine how far you go.

What is social freedom?

Social freedom means you choose your relationships, instead of leaving them to where you happen to work or live.

It covers family, friendship, partners and community: who you're close to, who you build with, and who you make time for.

Why social freedom matters

The other 6 freedoms are better shared. Time freedom means little if there's nobody to spend it with. Location freedom can get lonely fast.

And the people around you shape your habits, your ambitions and your standards more than any plan does.

@thenavidm

A meaningful life isn’t built on endless meetings and shallow connections.

Prioritize deep relationships with people who inspire, challenge, and elevate you.

My social freedom story

My family is where it starts. That Christmas in 2014, when I decided to leave Sweden, I was in Phuket with my brother Martin and my mom.

My business has also been a way to meet people I admire. My first blog interview in 2013 was with Pat Flynn, and interviews and summits have connected me with hundreds of creators and entrepreneurs since. Many became friends, mentors and partners.

[NAVID INPUT: the people you'd name in this chapter, and how you build community as you move between countries. Only what you want public.]

What social freedom costs

  • Hard conversations. Stepping back from people you've known for years isn't easy.
  • Effort. Deep relationships take time, especially across countries and time zones.
  • Loneliness in between. Leaving the wrong circle can mean a quiet stretch before the right one forms.

Freedom is great, but life is better when shared with the right people.

FAQs about social freedom

The questions I get most about social freedom, relationships and community.

Social freedom means you choose your relationships, instead of leaving them to where you happen to work or live. It's choosing who you spend your time with: people who inspire, challenge and elevate you.

The other freedoms are better shared, and the people around you shape your habits, ambitions and standards more than any plan does.

Draw a connection map of who you spend time with, invest more in the relationships that give you energy, set kind boundaries, go where your people are and give first.

Deep relationships take effort across countries and time zones, so they need time in the calendar, the same way work does, plus communities like masterminds and events wherever you are.

Hard conversations when you step back from people, the effort that deep relationships take, and sometimes a lonely stretch before the right circle forms.

Final thoughts on social freedom

Social freedom is choosing your people on purpose.

Draw your connection map, invest in the few who elevate you, and give first. The rest of your freedoms will feel better for it.

The 7 freedoms

This post is 1 of 7, in the order I build them: money first, because without it you don't control your time.

Read them all, starting with the one that feels most out of reach:

They start with what freedom means to me and my lifestyle design blueprint.
