Links to videos (watch?v=…), Shorts (/shorts/…), live streams (/live/…) and youtu.be all work.
Which size to pick
YouTube keeps each thumbnail in a few sizes. On the videos I checked on September 26, 2026, they were:

The tool shows only the sizes a video really has, each with its file size. Some older videos have no 1280 × 720 or original.
Shorts thumbnails
A Short's original thumbnail is vertical, 1080 × 1920, the way it shows in the Shorts feed.
The tool lists it first, then the wide sizes YouTube also keeps.
Downloading on iPhone and Android
On a phone, press Download and the thumbnail saves to your downloads: the Files app on an iPhone, the Downloads folder on Android.
Where your phone supports it, tap Share or save once to get the image, then again to open the share sheet. An iPhone offers Save Image there, which puts it in Photos.
Why not the video?
YouTube's terms don't allow downloading its videos, so this tool saves thumbnails only.
To save a video you uploaded yourself, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, open the video's menu and press Download.
Use a thumbnail as a reference
The fastest way to a better thumbnail is to start from one that works. Most creators now make theirs with an AI image tool: ChatGPT (GPT Image 2), Gemini (Nano Banana), Higgsfield, OpenArt, Magnific, Fal.ai or Runway. Canva works too, by hand.
The prompt keeps what the rules of a good thumbnail need:
- Your face from your photo only. The tool matches your likeness and poses you fresh, instead of copying the reference's person.
- The layout from the thumbnail. Where the face and the text sit, never its words or logos.
- 3 to 5 words that add to the title, never repeat it, with 1 word in a slim box.
- At most 3 things that catch the eye, and nothing in the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the length.
For ideas first, pick Give me 5 concepts like it: it plans 5 thumbnails for your topic and ends with a ready image prompt for the best one.
