Here's how KDP works out royalties, what changed on July 7, 2026, and the pricing mistakes that cost authors the most.
What is a KDP royalty?
A KDP royalty is what Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing pays you for each copy sold.
For eBooks, it's 35% or 70% of the list price. For paperbacks and hardcovers, it's 50% or 60%, minus the printing cost.
On your Amazon page, each format has its own price, like on Fourth Wing's:
- The formats: Kindle, audiobook, hardcover and paperback, each priced on its own.
- The list price, before any Amazon discount. For a paperback, KDP says a lower promotional price "won't affect your royalties".
The calculator works out each format's royalty from its list price.
How KDP calculates eBook royalties
KDP's 70% option takes a delivery cost first. The formula is 70% × (list price − VAT − delivery).
Here are the 70% bands, from KDP's own page:

Outside the band, it's 35% of the list price, with no delivery cost.
The 70% option has 3 more rules most calculators leave out:
- Your eBook must be at least 20% cheaper than the print edition on Amazon.
- In India, Japan, Brazil and Mexico, 70% needs the book in KDP Select.
- Delivery costs $0.15 per MB on Amazon.com, so image-heavy books keep less.

How KDP calculates paperback royalties
A paperback earns 60% of the list price from $9.99, and 50% below it. KDP then takes the printing cost.
Printing is a fixed cost plus a cost per page. For black ink on Amazon.com at a regular trim, it's $2.30 up to 110 pages, then $1.00 plus $0.012 a page:

KDP's own example: a $15, 333-page paperback costs $5.00 to print and earns $4.00.
Expanded Distribution, to other stores, pays 40% of the list price minus printing. At $15, that same book earns $1.00 there.
What changed on July 7, 2026
KDP raised the top of the 70% eBook band from $9.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com, with matching changes in other marketplaces.
It's the first change since 2007. Books already priced from $10 to $12.99 stay on 35% until you switch them in Rights & Pricing.
4 KDP pricing mistakes
These cost authors money on every copy:
- Pricing a paperback at $9.98, 1 cent under the 60% line
- Pricing an eBook at $2.98, which pays $1.04 instead of $1.99
- Leaving an eBook at $10 to $12.99 on 35% after July 7, 2026
- Pricing the eBook less than 20% under the paperback, which blocks 70%
