This free TikTok character counter counts your caption the way TikTok does, so most emoji count as 2. A caption posted through TikTok's own API can be up to 2,200 characters, counted in UTF-16 units.

It shows Instagram and every other platform beside it, so you can see where else the same caption fits.

Here's TikTok's caption limit, why emoji count as 2, and how to write a TikTok caption.

TikTok's caption limit

TextLimitHow it counts
TikTok caption2,200UTF-16 units, emoji 2

The limit comes from TikTok's own developer docs: "The maximum length is 2200 in UTF-16 runes." That's the limit for a caption posted through TikTok's API. The app itself may allow more.

Why emoji count as 2

Most emoji are stored as 2 UTF-16 units, and TikTok's docs count those units. A caption with 50 emoji uses 100 of its 2,200.

Writing a TikTok caption

  • Front-load the hook: the start of the caption shows over the video.
  • Put keywords in plain words: people search TikTok, so say what the video is about.
  • Keep hashtags few and specific: they're part of the character count too.

Post it everywhere

The counter above checks the same post on every platform at once, and each has its own page too: X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube.

When it's ready, turn it into an image for the feeds that want one with my post image generator, and schedule it with the tools on my creator tools page.
