It checks your ISBN, hyphenates it from the International ISBN Agency's own ranges, and draws the barcode at KDP's size. Then it scans the barcode back, so you know it reads before you print it.
Here's what an ISBN barcode is, what the price code means, and what KDP asks for.
What is an ISBN barcode?
An ISBN barcode is your 13-digit ISBN drawn as an EAN-13 barcode, the kind a store's scanner reads.
Beside it sits a smaller 5-digit barcode, the add-on, that carries the price. Together they're sometimes called a Bookland barcode.
On Amazon, the ISBN is listed in the product details, like on Fourth Wing's page:
- Print length: the page count.
- ISBN-13: the number your barcode carries.
- Dimensions: the book's width, thickness and height.
The generator draws that ISBN-13 as the barcode for your back cover.
Do you need one for KDP?
Not always. If your cover has no barcode, KDP adds one to the back cover for free.
You need your own when another printer asks for one, or when you design the back cover yourself. KDP's rules for your own barcode:
- About 2″ × 1.2″, and at least 1.4″ × 0.8″
- At least 0.25″ from the spine and the trim
- 100% black on a solid white background
- A vector file, or 300 pixels per inch
- A price code that matches your list price, if it has one
The PDF from this generator draws every bar in 100% black ink, not a mix of colors.
What the price code means
The first digit of the add-on is the currency. The other 4 are the price, from the Book Industry Study Group's rules:

UK pounds start with 0 or 1, Australian dollars with 3, and New Zealand dollars with 4.
The $100 to $499.99 range has been in the rules since 2004, so a pricey book can still carry its price.
ISBN-10 or ISBN-13?
Barcodes use the ISBN-13. Type an old ISBN-10 and the generator converts it, with the right check digit.
If your check digit is wrong, it tells you which digit it should be.
4 barcode mistakes
These get covers rejected or books scanned at the wrong price:
- A price code that doesn't match the list price
- Bars in "rich black" or RGB black instead of 100% black
- A barcode smaller than 1.4″ × 0.8″
- Text or images in the barcode spot when you want KDP's free barcode
