Question 1

What is a Bluesky character counter?

Accepted Answer

A Bluesky character counter is a tool that counts your post the way the Bluesky protocol does, against its 300-character limit.

Bluesky counts graphemes, the characters you see, so an emoji with a skin tone is 1 where X counts it as 2.

Question 2

What is the Bluesky character limit?

Accepted Answer

The Bluesky character limit is 300 characters per post, as the AT Protocol's post record defines it. It counts graphemes, the characters you see.

Question 3

Do emoji count as 1 character on Bluesky?

Accepted Answer

Yes, an emoji counts as 1 character on Bluesky, because Bluesky counts graphemes: even an emoji with a skin tone or a family emoji is 1.

Question 4

Why does my post fit on X but not on Bluesky?

Accepted Answer

A post can fit on X but not on Bluesky because the 2 count differently. X counts a link as 23 and most emoji as 2, while the counter counts a link's full length on Bluesky, and the limits are 280 and 300.

Question 5

Can I post to Bluesky from Claude?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can post to Bluesky from Claude with my open source Bluesky MCP server and CLI, linked under this post.

Question 6

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No, nothing you type leaves your browser: the counting runs on your device, and your draft is kept in this browser only.

Question 7

Who is the Bluesky character counter for?

Accepted Answer

The Bluesky character counter is for anyone posting on Bluesky, and anyone cross-posting from X or Threads who wants to know the post fits before it goes out.

Question 8

Who made the Bluesky character counter?

Accepted Answer

I did. I'm Navid Moazzez, and I made the Bluesky character counter as one of my free tools on navid.me.
