Most page count calculators divide your words by a fixed number. This one measures each font's own letter widths, so the same words give a different page count in each font.
Here's how page count is worked out, what changes it most, and what KDP requires at each length.
What is a book page count?
A book page count is the number of printed pages, front matter and chapters included, always an even number.
It sets your printing cost, your spine width and the lowest price KDP lets you charge.
On Amazon, it's the print length in the product details, like on Fourth Wing's page:
- Print length: the page count.
- ISBN-13: the number the barcode on the back carries.
- Dimensions: the book's width, thickness and height.
The calculator works out the first one from your word count, before you print.
How the page count is worked out
The calculator builds each page the way a book designer would:
- The text block: the trim size, minus the margins
- Characters per line: the font's average letter width at your size
- Lines per page: your line height, minus a line each for the page number and running head
- Your paragraphs: each one ends part way along a line
- Your chapters: each starts on a new page, a third of the way down

The font changes more than you'd think
The same 60,000 words, at 6" × 9", 11 pt, with the same margins:

That's 28% more pages from the font alone. The size matters too: EB Garamond fits 532 words a page at 10 pt, and 369 at 12 pt.
KDP's margins grow with your page count
KDP's minimum inside margin, the gutter, depends on your page count:

The outside margins must be at least 0.25″, or 0.375″ with bleed. The calculator widens the gutter for you when your book needs it.
Spine width and cover size
Your spine width is your page count times the paper's thickness, from KDP:
- White paper: 0.002252″ a page
- Cream paper: 0.0025″ a page
- Premium color: 0.002347″ a page
So a 300-page book on cream has a 0.75″ spine. KDP prints spine text only from 79 pages.
Your full paperback cover is 0.125″ of bleed on each side, plus the back, the spine and the front. For a 6" × 9" book of 300 pages on cream, that's 13″ × 9.25″.
