What is an Instagram carousel?
An Instagram carousel is 1 post with several photos or videos that people swipe through. It holds up to 20 (Instagram Help).
For an idea in words, it works like a short book: a hook on the first slide, 1 idea on each slide after it, and a reason to follow you at the end.
How to make an Instagram carousel
A long post splits between paragraphs, and a long paragraph between sentences, never inside one. A thread gives 1 slide per post. The last slide asks people to follow you, with your photo and handle.

Instagram carousel size
Every slide here comes out at the same size, so none of them gets cut. The sizes that work:

A size too small for your text is grayed out, and a slide whose text drops under 32 pixels, small on a phone, gets a warning.
What makes an Instagram carousel work
A carousel earns its swipes 1 slide at a time. 4 things make it work:
- A cover that stops the scroll. It's the only slide people see before they swipe, so it's your hook
- 1 idea per slide, big enough to read without zooming in
- The same look on every slide, so the swipe feels like 1 post, not 10
- A last slide worth acting on: follow you, or save the post for later
Animated Instagram carousels
Press Download animated slides for 1 MP4 per slide, each typing its own words out. Instagram lets a carousel mix photos and videos (Instagram Help), so the slides move as people swipe. Post them in order, the same way as images.

Up to 20 slides
Instagram takes up to 20 slides in a carousel. If your text makes more, the tool tells you, so you can cut a slide or split it into 2 posts.
