This free book royalty calculator shows what you earn per copy at every store at once.

Most calculators use 1 flat rate per way of publishing. This one uses each store's own rules, with KDP's price bands, printing costs and delivery fees in.

Here's what a book royalty is, what each store pays, and the rules that move your number the most.

What is a book royalty?

A book royalty is the share of each sale the author keeps.

Self-published, you set the price and the store keeps its cut. With a publisher, you get a smaller share, and your advance is earned back from it first.

On a store's page, each format has its own price, like on Fourth Wing's Amazon page:

  1. The formats: Kindle, audiobook, hardcover and paperback, each with its own price and its own royalty rule.
  2. The list price, before any discount. For a KDP paperback, a lower promotional price "won't affect your royalties", in KDP's words.

So the calculator asks for a list price per format, and works out each store's share from it.

What each store pays

Here's each store's rate, from its own pages:

Amazon KDP70% from $2.99 to $12.99, 35% outside that60% from $9.99, 50% below, minus printing–

Draft2Digital60% at Apple, B&N and Kobo––

The calculator puts all of these side by side for your book, sorted by what you keep.

The rules that move your royalty the most

A few rules change your royalty far more than the headline rate.

KDP's 70% band now runs to $12.99

On July 7, 2026, KDP raised the top of its 70% band from $9.99 to $12.99. It was the first change since 2007.

A book already priced between $10 and $12.99 stays on 35% until you switch it by hand in Rights & Pricing. At $12.99, that's $4.55 a copy on 35% against $8.99 on 70%.

1 cent can be worth $0.95

At $2.98, a 1 MB eBook earns $1.04 on KDP. At $2.99, it earns $1.99.

The paperback line at $9.99

KDP pays 50% on paperbacks at $9.98 or less, and 60% at $9.99 and up. Printing comes off after.

A 200-page black ink paperback costs $3.40 to print. At $9.98 it earns $1.59. At $9.99 it earns $2.59.

Big files pay delivery

KDP's 70% option takes $0.15 per MB on Amazon.com. At $4.99, a 1 MB eBook earns $3.39, and a 20 MB one earns $1.75.

Audible's new rates

On May 26, 2026, Audible's ACX moved to 50% for exclusive audiobooks and 30% for the rest. The old 40% and 25% end by the close of the year.

Everything you type is kept in your browser, and the other book tools pick it up.

Royalty is not profit

A royalty is what each sale pays you. Profit is what's left after editing, the cover and ads.

The book profit calculator takes your royalties from here and tells you when the book pays for itself.
