Limit: 3.000

Counted the way LinkedIn counts, in UTF-16 units: each emoji and each bold or italic letter from a formatter counts as 2. Links count at full length. LinkedIn shows up to 3 lines of a post before "… more", so put your hook first.

This free LinkedIn character counter shows how much of LinkedIn's 3,000-character limit your post uses, as you type. That sounds like a lot, until you paste in a long story and LinkedIn won't let you post it.

It also shows what the same post looks like on X, Threads, Bluesky and every other platform.

Here's LinkedIn's limit, where your hook has to go, and how to write a long post that still fits.

LinkedIn's character limit

TextLimitHow it counts
LinkedIn post3,000UTF-16 units: emoji and bold letters are 2, links in full

The limit comes from LinkedIn's own help page. LinkedIn counts the way computers store text, in UTF-16 units: most letters are 1, but every emoji and every bold or italic letter from a formatter is 2. I tested it in LinkedIn's post box on September 26, 2026: 1,000 emoji and 1,000 letters fit exactly, and 1 more letter was over the limit. The counter counts the same way, and a link counts at its full length.

Put your hook in the first lines

LinkedIn shows up to 3 lines of a post before "… more", on phones and laptops alike: about 160 characters on a phone. The first lines decide whether anyone reads the rest, and my LinkedIn post preview shows exactly where yours is cut.

  • Open with the result: the number, the lesson or the change, before the backstory.
  • Keep the first line short: one clear sentence reads fastest in the feed.
  • Save the link for the end or the first comment, so the post leads with your words.

Writing a long LinkedIn post that fits

When you're over 3,000, cut in this order:

  • Filler words: really, very, just and actually add length and nothing else.
  • Repeated points: say each idea once, in its strongest form.
  • Long links: a full URL can take up 100 characters on LinkedIn.

Post it everywhere

The counter above checks the same post on every platform at once, and each has its own page too: X, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube.

When it's ready, turn it into an image for the feeds that want one with my post image generator, and schedule it with the tools on my creator tools page.

LinkedIn Character Counter FAQs

Questions about LinkedIn's character limits? Here's what to know.

The LinkedIn character limit for a post is 3,000 characters, according to LinkedIn's help page. The counter shows how many you have left as you type.

Yes, links count toward LinkedIn's limit at their full length, so a long URL can take up a real share of your 3,000.

LinkedIn doesn't shorten links the way X does.

Yes, each emoji counts as 2 characters toward LinkedIn's 3,000 limit, and so does each bold or italic letter made with a formatter. I tested it in LinkedIn's post box on September 26, 2026: 1,000 emoji and 1,000 letters fit exactly, and 1 more letter was over the limit.

LinkedIn cuts a post after up to 3 lines with "… more", on phones and laptops alike, and drops blank lines at the end of those 3. That's about 160 characters on a phone and 230 on a laptop, measured in a browser with Apple's system font. The LinkedIn post preview shows exactly where your post is cut.

Yes, the counter checks the same post for X, Threads and every other platform at once: switch tabs, or look at the chips under the count to see where it fits.

No, nothing you type leaves your browser: the counting runs on your device. Your draft is kept in this browser only, and Clear removes it.

The LinkedIn character counter is for anyone who writes on LinkedIn: founders, creators, consultants and marketers who want a long post to fit before they paste it in.
