Creative freedom is the sixth of my 7 freedoms: doing work that energizes you, in your own voice, and owning what you make.

For me it's the freedom that turned into a business. Everything I've built started with making something and putting it out there.

Creative freedom isn’t about making something perfect.

It’s about making something true to who you are and expressing it without limits.

What is creative freedom?

Creative freedom means you decide what you make, how you share it and who it's for.

It has 2 sides:

Expression. Work that sounds like you and energizes you, not work you do because someone told you to.
Ownership. You control your content, your audience and your platform, instead of renting all of it from someone else.

Why creative freedom matters

Work you don't care about drains you, even when it pays well. Work that's yours gives energy back.

And when you own what you create, it keeps working for you: every post, video and product builds your name, not someone else's.

Creative freedom isn’t just about expression, it’s about ownership.

My creative freedom story

In June 2013 I launched my blog and published my first interview, with Pat Flynn. I had no audience and no experience, just the decision to start.

In November 2014 I hosted my first virtual summit, The Branding Summit, with close to 3,000 attendees. Hosting summits became the creative work I'm known for, and I've hosted many since, up to the AI Creator Summit.

Today a lot of my creative work happens with AI: I build my own tools, sites and systems with it, and I use it to turn ideas into content faster. My rule is that AI drafts, and I decide.

1Make 1 small thing this week. A post, a video or a page. Starting beats planning.

2Find your own voice. Write the way you talk. Your stories are what nobody else can copy.

3Own your platform. Build your email list and your own site, not only rented social accounts.

4Protect creative time. Block the hours when your energy is highest for making, not for meetings.

5Use AI with intent. Let it draft, research and repurpose, then shape the result with your own judgment.

6Ship, then improve. Done and shared teaches you more than perfect and hidden.

What creative freedom costs

Exposure. Putting your work out there means some people won't like it.
Uncertain payoff. Creative work often takes years to pay off.
Self-discipline. Nobody gives you deadlines, so you have to set your own.
