What is financial freedom? How to build enough to say no

You don't need to be rich to have financial freedom. Here's how I define it, how I built it, what it cost me, and a 7-day experiment to start.

What is financial freedom? How to build enough to say no

Financial freedom is the first of my 7 freedoms, and the one the other 6 lean on.

If you don't control your income, you don't control your time. You can't choose where you live, which projects you take, or when you say no.

This post is my definition, how I built it, and what it has cost me along the way.

@thenavidm

Financial freedom isn’t about having millions, it’s about having choices.

What is financial freedom?

Financial freedom means money is no longer the thing that decides for you.

You don't need to be rich. You need income that isn't tied to the hours you work, and enough of a buffer to walk away from a job, a client or a project that doesn't fit your life.

For me it comes down to 3 things:

  • Income that doesn't depend on my hours. If I take a month off, the business keeps going.
  • Enough to refuse. I can say no to work that doesn't fit, without panic.
  • No single point of failure. No one client, platform or boss can take it all away.

Why financial freedom comes first

I put money first in my 7 freedoms for a practical reason.

Time freedom, location freedom and even mental freedom are hard to hold on to while money decides everything. A tight month pulls you back into saying yes to things you don't want.

Money was never the goal. It's the floor the other freedoms stand on.

@thenavidm

Money isn’t freedom.

But without financial freedom, real freedom is impossible.

My financial freedom story

I started my online business in 2013, as a law student in Sweden with no experience and no connections.

In July 2013 I made my first dollar online, a $65 affiliate commission. By the end of that year I had dropped out of law school for good. That was the biggest financial risk I have taken: no backup plan, and everyone around me certain I was making a mistake.

In February 2014 I sold my first digital product for $197. In November I hosted my first virtual summit, The Branding Summit: over $20,000 in sales and close to 3,000 attendees. On November 28 I quit my part-time job at a big bank, and made over $5,000 that same day.

Not everything has gone up. I lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in crypto through 2021 and 2022. I made it all back through my business, and it taught me the difference between income I control and money I only hope will grow.

How to build financial freedom

Here's the order I'd follow if I started again today.

My own mix has changed over the years: affiliate commissions first, then summits, courses and digital products, and today AI work. If you want the AI side, start with how to make money with AI as a creator.

Not financial advice This is how I think about my own money, not investment advice. For taxes, investing or anything legal, talk to a qualified professional where you live.

What financial freedom costs

Every freedom has a price. Here's what this one asks of you:

  • Uncertain income at first. No paycheck means some months are better than others.
  • Full responsibility. No one else plans your taxes, savings or next move.
  • Time up front. Building income that isn't tied to your hours takes hours first.
  • Risk. Leaving law school and my bank job could have gone the other way.

You don’t need a million-dollar business to live life on your terms.

But you do need smart income streams that support your freedom.

FAQs about financial freedom

The questions I get most about financial freedom, answered the way I see it.

Financial freedom means money is no longer the thing that decides for you. It's income that isn't tied to the hours you work, and enough of a buffer that you can walk away from a job, a client or a project that doesn't fit your life.

No. Financial freedom is about having choices, not millions. You can have a high income and no freedom if every dollar is already spent, and a modest income with a lot of freedom if it covers your life and doesn't depend on your hours.

Because if you don't control your income, you don't control your time. Time, location and mental freedom are hard to hold on to while money decides everything.

Define what enough looks like, build a buffer that covers several months of costs, and add a second income stream close to what you already do. Then remove any single client or platform that makes up most of your income.

Yes. AI can take over repeat work like admin, drafts and research, and every hour you get back can go into building income that isn't tied to your time.

Uncertain income at first, full responsibility for your own money, time up front, and real risk. The trade-off is the power to say no.

Final thoughts on financial freedom

Financial freedom is the room to say no, and you build it one choice at a time.

Start with enough, not more. Then build the buffer, add the second stream and let systems return your hours.

The 7 freedoms

This post is 1 of 7, in the order I build them: money first, because without it you don't control your time.
