This free words to pages calculator turns your word count into printed book pages.

It lays your words out at a real trim size and font, not a fixed number of words per page. Then it shows the same words in 10 fonts and 6 trim sizes.

Here's how many pages common word counts make, and why the answer depends on your book's design.

What is a words to pages calculator?

A words to pages calculator converts a word count into the pages it fills.

For a book, that depends on the trim size, the font, the size and the margins. A document at 12 pt, double-spaced, is a different page again.

How many pages is 50,000 words?

Here's how many pages common word counts make at 11 pt, 1.3 line height and comfortable margins:

Words6" × 9", EB Garamond6" × 9", Libre Baskerville5.5" × 8.5", EB Garamond5" × 8", EB Garamond

50,000132168152184
60,000156200182220
70,000182234210256
80,000206266240292
90,000232298268326
100,000256330298362
120,000306394356434

So 50,000 words is anywhere from 132 to 184 pages, depending on the design. Each count includes 6 pages of front and back matter, and a new page for each chapter.

What changes the page count

Here's what moves it, from most to least:

  • Trim size. A 5" × 8" book takes about 40% more pages than a 6" × 9" one.
  • Font. Libre Baskerville takes about 28% more pages than EB Garamond.
  • Size. EB Garamond fits 532 words a page at 10 pt and 369 at 12 pt.
  • Paragraphs and chapters. Dialog and short paragraphs leave more half-empty lines.

The calculator shows each of these for your own word count.
