Key takeaways

Online skills pay far more per hour than online tasks. On Upwork, business coaches charge a median of $100 an hour, while virtual assistants charge $13 (Upwork).
AI skills are near the top and growing fastest. AI developers charge a median of $90 an hour on Upwork, and freelancer earnings for AI video grew 329% in 2025 (Upwork).
Products and content pay per sale or per view, so they start slow and can grow past any hourly rate.
Fiverr, Preply, Shutterstock and Patreon all pay outside the US through PayPal or Payoneer, among other methods.
Many platforms require you to be 18, but Fiverr and Etsy let 13 to 17 year olds sell through a parent's account.

What is an online side hustle?

An online side hustle is work you do on the internet, outside your main job, for clients, customers or an audience. You need a laptop and an internet connection, and you can do it from anywhere a platform can pay you.

Online side hustles pay in two ways. Skills like writing, design and building pay by the hour or by the project, while products and content pay per sale or per view. Skills pay sooner, and products and content can grow past any hourly rate.

The 50 in this guide come in four groups:

$40 an hour or more

Coaching, consulting and AI builds pay the most per hour.

$25 to $39 an hour

Writing, design, ads and building are skills you can learn in months.

Under $25 an hour

These are the easiest to start, and many need no experience.

Per sale, view or video

Products and content start slow and keep paying.
