What is KENP?
KENP stands for Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, the page count Amazon uses to pay Kindle Unlimited authors.
KDP works it out with standard formatting, from the start of chapter 1 to the end, images included. You'll find your book's count, its KENPC, on its Promote and Advertise page in KDP.
How Kindle Unlimited pays
Amazon puts a fund aside each month and splits it by pages read. It announces the fund, but it doesn't publish a rate per page.
So the rate is worked out from the fund and the pages read. Here are the last 6 months, from Written Word Media's tracker:

- A reader's pages count only the first time they read them.
- Each reader can earn you at most 3,000 pages per book.
Kindle Unlimited or a sale?
A 300-page book (KENPC) pays about $1.55 for a full read at August's rate. The same book sold at $4.99 pays $3.39.
So 1 sale pays about 2.2 full reads. Kindle Unlimited pays more when it brings readers who wouldn't have bought, which the calculator can't know, but you can compare your own numbers.
What KDP Select asks in return
Kindle Unlimited comes with KDP Select, and KDP Select has 3 terms:
- Each term lasts 90 days, and renews itself unless you turn that off.
- Your eBook must be sold only in the Kindle Store for the term.
- Your paperback, hardcover and audiobook can still sell anywhere.
So Kindle Unlimited means leaving Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play for your eBook. The book royalty calculator shows what those stores would pay.
