Key takeaways
What is an Upwork fee calculator?
An Upwork fee calculator takes Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee off what you bill, to show your payout.
Upwork's fee now changes from contract to contract, so the same rate can pay you differently on two jobs.
Who is the Upwork fee calculator for?
It's for freelancers and the clients who hire them:
- Freelance rate calculator – freelancers setting the rate their life needs.
- Hourly to salary calculator – freelancers comparing a rate with a salary.
- Fiverr fee calculator – freelancers choosing between marketplaces.
- Invoice generator – freelancers billing clients outside the platform.
It runs in your browser, and nothing you enter leaves your device.
How to use the Upwork fee calculator
Upwork's fees
From Upwork's help center:
| Who pays | Fee |
|---|---|
| Freelancer | 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you accept |
| Client | Up to 7.99% on each payment, 3% from a US bank account |
| Client | A one-time $0.99 to $14.99 when a contract starts |
Once a contract starts, its fee is fixed and won't change.
An example
A $500 milestone on a contract with a 10% fee:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| You bill | $500.00 |
| Upwork's fee (10%) | −$50.00 |
| You get | $450.00 |
| Your client's fee (up to 7.99%) | +$39.95 |
That's the same example Upwork's own help page uses: a 10% fee on $500 pays you $450.
How to set your Upwork rate
Start from what you want to keep, then add the fee. At a 10% fee, billing about $1,111.11 nets $1,000. The freelance rate calculator works out the rate your costs and time off need.
