This free fraction calculator adds, takes away, multiplies and divides fractions and mixed numbers, and shows every step.

It gives the answer in lowest terms, as a mixed number, a decimal and a percent, and draws it so you can see what it means.

I built it because most fraction calculators give the answer and skip the working, and the working is what homework asks for.

Here's how each operation works, a worked example, and the mistakes that cost marks.

Key takeaways

To add or take away fractions, put them over the lowest common denominator first: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
To multiply, multiply the tops and the bottoms: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply: 3/4 ÷ 2/3 = 3/4 × 3/2 = 9/8.
Always simplify at the end by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common factor.
9/8 as a mixed number is 1 1/8: 8 goes into 9 once, with 1 left.

What is a fraction calculator?

A fraction calculator does arithmetic with fractions and gives the answer as a fraction, not just a decimal.

This one also reads mixed numbers like 1 1/2 and decimals like 0.75, which it turns into exact fractions (3/4).

How fraction math works

Each operation has its own rule.

Use the fraction calculator0/5

Adding and taking away

Fractions can only be added when their bottoms match. So you find the lowest common denominator, the smallest number both bottoms go into, and rewrite each fraction over it.

Multiplying

Multiply the tops together and the bottoms together. No common denominator needed.

Dividing

Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by it upside down. So 3/4 ÷ 2/3 becomes 3/4 × 3/2.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: 1/2 + 1/3.

The lowest common denominator of 2 and 3 is 6. So 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6, and 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

5/6 is already in lowest terms. As a decimal it's 0.8333, or 83.33%.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that cost marks.

  • Adding the bottoms: 1/2 + 1/3 isn't 2/5
  • Flipping the first fraction when dividing instead of the second
  • Forgetting to simplify: 6/12 should be 1/2
  • Dropping the 1 in 1 1/2 before converting a mixed number

Who is the fraction calculator for?

It's for students, parents checking homework, and anyone scaling a recipe, and these tools help around it.

Show the steps, and the answer takes care of itself.

Fraction Calculator FAQs

Questions about the fraction calculator? Here's what to know.

A fraction calculator adds, takes away, multiplies and divides fractions and gives the answer as a fraction.

This free one also shows each step, the mixed number, the decimal and the percent.

Rewrite both fractions over their lowest common denominator, then add the tops.

1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

Flip the second fraction and multiply.

3/4 ÷ 2/3 = 3/4 × 3/2 = 9/8.

Multiply the tops together and the bottoms together, then simplify.

2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.

Divide the top and the bottom by their greatest common factor.

6/12 divided by 6 on both is 1/2.

Type the number before the fraction, a space, then the fraction, like 1 1/2.

Divide the top by the bottom: the answer goes in front, and the remainder goes over the bottom.

9/8 is 1 1/8.

Yes, type a decimal like 0.75 and the calculator turns it into the exact fraction, 3/4.

Yes, it's free with no sign-up.

It runs in your browser, and your numbers stay on your device.
