This free net worth calculator adds up what you own and what you owe, line by line, and shows your net worth with bars for each part.

Add your age and it puts your number next to the median for your age group in the Federal Reserve's survey.

I built it because net worth is the one money number that shows the full picture, and it's most useful when you track it. So you can save today's number and watch your chart grow each time you come back.

Here's how to work out your net worth, how it compares, and what to do with the number once you have it.

Key takeaways

Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe, and a home counts at what it would sell for today.
The US median net worth in the Fed's 2022 survey runs from $39,000 under 35 to $409,900 at 65 to 74.
In the example, $598,000 owned minus $302,500 owed is a net worth of $295,500, about 2.2 times the median for ages 35 to 44.
Debts at half your assets or more mean most of what you own is still borrowed.
Saving your number each month or quarter draws your net worth over time, right in this browser.

What is a net worth calculator?

A net worth calculator subtracts your debts from your assets. What's left is what you'd have if you sold everything and paid everyone back today.

The calculator sorts both sides by kind, like cash, investments, a home, a mortgage or credit cards. So you see where your wealth sits, not only how big it is.

How to use the net worth calculator

It takes about five minutes with your latest statements open.

Your numbers stay in this browser, and nothing is sent to my server.

What counts, and at what value

The rule is simple: use what each thing is worth today, not what you paid.

ItemCount it at
Cash and savingsToday's balance
Investments and retirement accountsToday's value
Your homeWhat it would sell for today
A carWhat it would sell for, which drops every year
A businessA fair price for your share, or leave it out if unsure
Every debtWhat you'd pay to clear it today

Leave out things you'd never sell, like furniture or clothes. They're worth far less than you paid, and counting them makes the number feel better than it is.

How your net worth compares

The Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances asks US households about their money every three years. Here's the median net worth by age from its 2022 survey.

AgeMedian net worth
Under 35$39,000
35 to 44$135,600
45 to 54$247,200
55 to 64$364,500
65 to 74$409,900
75 and over$335,600

The median is the middle household: half have more, half have less. These are the Fed's own figures from Table 2 of its October 2023 bulletin, in 2022 dollars.

If your currency isn't US dollars, the calculator shows the median without a multiple, because the figures are US households.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads when you press Try an example.

You're 38 and own $15,000 in cash, $60,000 in investments, $85,000 in retirement accounts, a $420,000 home and an $18,000 car. You owe $290,000 on the mortgage, $9,000 on the car and $3,500 on credit cards.

You own $598,000 and owe $302,500, so your net worth is $295,500. That's about 2.2 times the $135,600 median for ages 35 to 44.

Your debts are 51% of your assets. Most of that is the mortgage, and the home behind it, which is why the bars matter more than the total.

How to grow your net worth

Your net worth only moves in two ways: you own more, or you owe less.

Pay off the expensive debt first

Credit card interest costs more than most investments earn. The debt payoff calculator shows your debt-free date with the avalanche and the snowball.

Invest the difference every month

Money you add each month compounds for years. The compound interest calculator shows how fast.

Earn more

Raising your income can do more than any cut. The freelance rate calculator and the business idea generator are two places to start.

Mistakes to avoid

These make a net worth look better or worse than it is.

  • Counting your home at what you paid instead of what it would sell for
  • Leaving out a debt because it feels small
  • Counting things you'd never sell, like furniture
  • Comparing with friends instead of with your own past numbers
  • Checking every day, when every month or quarter shows the real trend

Your own chart, month after month, is the comparison that matters.

Assets that earn while you sleep

Not every asset is equal. Some cost you money every month, and some pay you.

Wealth is assets that earn while you sleep

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki makes the same split: an asset puts money in your pocket, and a liability takes it out. Run your list through that test and you'll see your net worth differently.
