Key takeaways

My free SEO checker shows what is holding your page back in search, runs 24 checks with fixes and adds Google Lighthouse results.
The tool tests raw HTML without running JavaScript across four groups, covering on-page items, site basics, social sharing and local markup.
Your score is out of 100 across five parts, with on-page counting 35, site basics 25, speed 15, accessibility 15 and social 10.
You get Google Lighthouse scores on a mid-range phone over a slow connection in about 40 seconds.

What is an SEO checker?

An SEO checker is a tool that reads a web page and tests the things search engines look at: its title, description, headings, content, links and technical setup.

Mine also runs Google Lighthouse, so you get speed, accessibility and best practices in the same report.

How to check your page's SEO

Check your page's SEO0/4

What the SEO checker looks at

The report reads the raw HTML, without running JavaScript, the way most crawlers do. It looks at 4 groups:

  • On-page – the title, meta description, H1, heading outline, words, image alt text, keyword density and internal links.
  • Site basics – HTTPS, mixed content, noindex, canonical, robots.txt, sitemap, language, doctype, character set, the phone viewport and the favicon.
  • Social sharing – Open Graph tags, the X card and links to your profiles.
  • Local – LocalBusiness markup, when the page has a phone number or a map.

Each check shows the evidence it read, like your title and its length, so you can see why it passed or failed.

The most common SEO issues, and how to fix them

I ran five well-known pages through the checker on October 1, 2026, to see what it finds on real sites:

Paul Graham's home page
Score
49
What it found
No meta description, no H1, 35 words of text, 11 images without alt text, no phone viewport, no Open Graph tags
Wikipedia's SEO article
Score

What it found
No meta description, 2 images without alt text, no X card
Stripe
Score
93
What it found
A description and an H1 a little long
Zapier
Score
97
What it found
Open Graph tags missing a field or two
My how to start a blog guide
Score
98
What it found
One skipped heading level

A famous site can get away with a score like 49. Most pages can't, so the fixes below are worth the few minutes they take.

These are the issues I see most, with the fix for each:

  • No meta description – write one of about 150 characters that says what the page gives.
  • No H1, or several – give the page one main heading that says what it's about.
  • Thin content – a page with a few dozen words gives Google little to rank, so add the answer people came for.
  • Images without alt text – describe each image in one sentence for screen readers and Google Images.
  • No phone viewport – add the viewport tag, or phones show a shrunken desktop page.
  • Insecure images on a secure page – load every image over https, or browsers may block them.
  • No Open Graph tags – add a title and an image, so a shared link shows a proper card.

Each check in the report has its own How to fix, with the code to paste where it helps, and the title and meta checker shows exactly how your title and description look in Google.

Google Lighthouse, in the same report

Lighthouse is Google's own test. It loads the page on a mid-range phone over a slow connection and scores performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO.

The report shows all 4 scores, the load as a film strip, and every audit that failed, with Google's explanation. When Google has enough real Chrome visits, you also see your Core Web Vitals from real people.

Local SEO checks

If people visit your business, Google needs to know where it is and how to reach it.

The checker reads three things for that: your local business schema, the contact details a visitor can see, and any map or coordinates. When the schema has a phone, it also checks that it matches the one on the page.

Here's what four store pages showed on October 1, 2026:

Apple Fifth Avenue
Local schema
LocalBusiness, with hours and coordinates
Phone on the page
Yes, and it matches
Map or coordinates
Coordinates
IKEA Brooklyn
Local schema
FurnitureStore, with no phone
Phone on the page
No
Map or coordinates
A map embed
Whole Foods Columbus Circle
Local schema
None
Phone on the page
Yes
Map or coordinates
A Google Maps link
Katz's Delicatessen
Local schema
None
Phone on the page
Yes
Map or coordinates
None

Apple's page hands Google its name, address, phone, hours and coordinates in one place. The other three leave Google to work out the details from the page.

A page that isn't a local business passes all three checks. You only need them if people come to you.

How the score works

The score is out of 100, from 5 parts: on-page counts 35, site basics 25, social 10, speed 15 and accessibility 15.

A warning is worth half a check's points. If Google can't load your page, speed and accessibility are left out, never counted against you.

80 and up is strong SEO, 50 to 79 needs work, and under 50 needs a lot of work. A page in the 90s still has a few small fixes worth making.

SEO now that people search with AI too

Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in its AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that the best practices for SEO still apply.

So the same basics this checker tests, a clear title, real content, headings, alt text and a page Google can index, are what its AI features read too.

Other AI tools send their own crawlers, and a robots.txt can keep them out without you knowing.

Check that with the AI crawler checker, and see how ready your whole site is for AI agents with the AI agent readiness checker.

Beyond the checks

The report also shows the page's heading outline, the words and phrases it uses most and where they appear, every link with its text, and the technology the page runs on.

Fix the top of the list first, then check again. The score moves as soon as your changes are live.

Who is the SEO checker for?

It's for anyone who wants a page to be found:

And if you're checking a competitor, run both pages and copy what theirs does better.

SEO Checker FAQs

Questions about checking your SEO? Here's what to know.

An SEO checker is a tool that reads a web page and tests what search engines look at: the title, description, headings, content, links and technical setup.

This one runs 24 checks and Google's Lighthouse test, and shows a fix for each problem.

Type your page's address into the SEO checker and press Check SEO.

In about a minute you get a score out of 100 and what to fix first.

The score adds up 5 parts: on-page counts 35, site basics 25, social 10, speed 15 and accessibility 15.

A warning is worth half a check's points.

80 and up is strong SEO, 50 to 79 needs work, and under 50 needs a lot of work.

Even a page in the 90s usually has a small fix or two left.

Yes, the checker reads any public page, so you can run a competitor's and yours side by side.

It only reads what any visitor can see.

Paid SEO suites track your rankings, keywords and backlinks across a whole site over time.

This checker tests one page at a time, free, and tells you exactly what to fix on it.

The checks come back in a few seconds, and Google's Lighthouse test takes about 40 seconds more.

Check a page before you publish it and again after you change it.

For your most visited pages, once a month is enough to catch anything that broke.

Lighthouse is Google's own test of a web page's performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO.

The checker runs it through Google's PageSpeed Insights, on a mid-range phone over a slow connection.

A title of 30 to 65 characters usually shows in full in Google.

For the exact cut, by pixels, use my title and meta checker.

Keyword density is how often a word appears, as a share of all the words on the page.

The checker shows your top words and phrases and warns when 1 word passes 4% of the text.

Many crawlers read only the HTML the server sends, without running JavaScript.

If your text appears only after scripts run, those crawlers see an almost empty page.

Yes, the SEO checker is free, with no sign-up.

To keep it free for everyone, each person can run 8 checks every 10 minutes.

It reads your local business schema, your contact details and any map or coordinates.

It also checks that the phone in your schema matches the one on the page.

It's structured data that tells Google your business name, address, phone, opening hours and location.

My schema generator writes it for you.

Yes, every report has its own link, which works for 30 days.

Share it with whoever makes the changes.

The sitemap generator crawls your site and writes your sitemap, and the schema markup generator writes your JSON-LD.
