This free grade calculator works out your grade so far from each part of a class, and what you need on the final for the grade you want.

It also shows what the final needs for an A, a B, a C and a D, so you know where you stand before you study.

I built it because the question every student asks before a final is "what do I need?", and the math is easy to get wrong in your head.

Here's how it works, a worked example, and the formula.

Key takeaways

Your grade so far is each score × its share of the grade, added up, ÷ the shares you've done.
The final you need = (the grade you want − your grade so far × the share already done) ÷ the final's share.
A final worth 35% can move your grade a lot: from 84.5% so far, you'd need 86% for an 85.
If the answer is over 100%, that grade is out of reach.
College Board's letters: an A from 90, a B from 80, a C from 70 and a D from 65.

What is a grade calculator?

A grade calculator turns your scores on homework, quizzes and tests into your grade in a class, weighted the way your syllabus weights them.

With the final's share, it becomes a final grade calculator: it tells you the score you need for the grade you want.

How the grade is worked out

Most classes weight each part. Homework might be 20% of the grade and the final 35%.

The shares don't have to add up to 100. Your grade so far uses only the parts you've done.

A worked example

The grade so far is (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25) ÷ 65 = 84.5%.

For an 85 overall, the final needs (85 − 84.5 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35 = 86%.

For each letter on College Board's scale:

An A (0): it would take 100.3%
A B (0)
A C (0)
A D (0)

Mistakes to avoid

These are the ways the math goes wrong.

  • Averaging scores without their shares: a midterm worth 25% counts more than a quiz
  • Counting a part you haven't done as 0%
  • Using the wrong final share: check your syllabus
  • Assuming your school's letters match: some put an A at 93

Who is the grade calculator for?

It's for any student before a final, and these tools help around it.

Grade Calculator FAQs

Questions about the grade calculator? Here's what to know.

A grade calculator works out your grade in a class from each part, weighted by its share.

This free one also shows what you need on the final for every letter.

Multiply each score by its share of the grade, add them up, and divide by the shares you've done.

The calculator does it from your scores.

The final you need = (the grade you want − your grade so far × the share already done) ÷ the final's share.

Add the final's share in the calculator to see it for every letter.

Then that grade is out of reach with the final alone.

Ask your teacher about extra credit, or aim for the next letter.

No, the calculator uses only the parts you've done.

Your grade so far is weighted by those parts' shares.

It depends on the class, and your syllabus says.

Finals are often 20% to 40% of the grade.

On College Board's scale, 85% is a B.

An A starts at 90.

Yes, add as many parts as your class has, each with its score and share.

College Board's scale: an A is 90 to 100, a B 80 to 89, a C 70 to 79, a D 65 to 69, and below 65 an F.

Some schools use other cutoffs.

Yes, it's free with no sign-up.

It runs in your browser, and your numbers stay on your device.
