This free gravel calculator works out how much gravel to order for a driveway, a path or a base, in cubic yards and cubic meters.

Add your supplier's weight for a cubic yard, and it gives the tons too.

I built it because gravel is sold both by the yard and by the ton, and the weight changes with the stone.

Here's the formula, a worked example, and why the tons come from your supplier.

key_takeaways.mdTL;DR

Key takeaways

Cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 12 ÷ 27.
A 30 by 10 foot path, 3 inches deep, takes 2.78 cubic yards.
Tons = cubic yards × the tons a cubic yard weighs, which your supplier gives.
At 1.4 tons a cubic yard, the example's figure, that path takes 3.89 tons.

What is a gravel calculator?

A gravel calculator turns the size of a driveway, path or patio base into the gravel to order.

It gives cubic yards for a delivery, and tons when you add the stone's weight.

How gravel is measured

The volume is area × depth. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, by the units in NIST Handbook 44.

The weight depends on the stone and its size, so the calculator takes your supplier's figure instead of guessing.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a 30 by 10 foot path, 3 inches deep.

300 × 3 ÷ 12 = 75 cubic feet. 75 ÷ 27 = 2.78 cubic yards. At 1.4 tons a cubic yard, that's 3.89 tons.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Turning yards into tons with a weight for a different stone
  • Leaving the depth in inches
  • Rounding the order down instead of up

Who is the gravel calculator for?

It's for anyone building a driveway, a path or a base, and these tools help around it.

Ask the supplier for the weight once, and the order comes out right.
