This free cubic yard calculator turns an area and a depth into cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters.

It's for anything sold by the yard: topsoil, sand, fill dirt, compost or mulch.

I built it because supply yards quote by the cubic yard, while a garden bed is measured in feet and inches.

Here's the formula, a worked example, and the mistakes to avoid.

Key takeaways

Cubic feet = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 12.
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet.
A 20 by 10 foot bed, 6 inches deep, is 100 cubic feet, or 3.7 cubic yards.
1 cubic yard is about 0.765 cubic meters.

What is a cubic yard calculator?

A cubic yard calculator works out the volume of a space in cubic yards, the unit bulk materials are sold in.

It takes rectangles, circles and triangles, and adds up as many areas as you need.

How cubic yards work

Area × depth gives the volume. NIST Handbook 44 defines the yard as 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet.

DepthCubic yards for 100 sq ft
2 in0.62
3 in0.93
4 in1.23
6 in1.85

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a 20 by 10 foot bed, 6 inches deep.

200 × 6 ÷ 12 = 100 cubic feet. 100 ÷ 27 = 3.7 cubic yards, or 2.83 cubic meters.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Dividing by 9 instead of 27
  • Leaving the depth in inches
  • Measuring only the longest side of an odd-shaped bed

Who is the cubic yard calculator for?

It's for gardeners, landscapers and anyone ordering bulk material, and these tools help around it.

Order by the yard with the right number, and nothing's left over in the driveway.
