Work out the square footage of any room or shape, in feet or meters, and add up as many areas as you like.

1

Your numbers

Add an area for each room or shape, and they're added up. A circle takes the distance across it.

This free square footage calculator works out the area of any room or space, in square feet, square meters and square yards.

It takes rectangles, circles and triangles, so an L-shaped room is just 2 rectangles added up.

I built it because flooring, paint and furniture all start from the same number, and odd-shaped rooms are where the math goes wrong.

Here's the formula for each shape, a worked example, and the mistakes to avoid.

key_takeaways.mdTL;DR

Key takeaways

A rectangle's area is length × width: a 12 by 10 foot room is 120 square feet.
A circle's area is π × (across ÷ 2)², and a triangle's is base × height ÷ 2.
Split an L-shaped or odd room into simple shapes, and add them up.
1 square meter is about 10.764 square feet, and 1 square yard is 9 square feet.

What is a square footage calculator?

A square footage calculator works out the area of a floor, a wall or a plot of land in square feet.

It's the first number for flooring, paint, tiles, and the size on a home's listing.

How square footage works

Each shape has its own formula. NIST Handbook 44 defines the foot as exactly 0.3048 meters, so the metric answer is exact too.

RectangleLength × width
Circleπ × (across ÷ 2)²
TriangleBase × height ÷ 2

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a 12 by 10 foot bedroom, a 14 by 12 foot living room, and a round area 6 feet across.

120 + 168 + 28.3 = 316.3 square feet, or 29.38 square meters.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Multiplying an L-shaped room's 2 longest sides together
  • Mixing feet and inches: 10 feet 6 inches is 10.5 feet
  • Using the distance across a circle as its radius

Who is the square footage calculator for?

It's for anyone planning a floor, a paint job or a move, and these tools help around it.

Measure once, and every project after starts from the right number.

Split it into 2 rectangles, work out each one, and add them up.

About 10.764 square feet.

9 square feet, since a yard is 3 feet.

Halve the distance across, square it, and multiply by π.

A circle 6 feet across is about 28.3 square feet.
