This free chronological age calculator works out a child's or an adult's age on a test date in years, months and days, the way test manuals ask for it, and lays out the subtraction step by step.

It also gives the age in months and the rounded age, so you can find the right norm table.

I built it because teachers, speech therapists and psychologists do this sum by hand on every test form, and a slip of a month can put a score in the wrong table.

Here the borrowing is shown, so you can check it against your protocol.

Key takeaways

Chronological age is the test date minus the date of birth, in years, months and days.
When the test day is smaller, borrow 30 days from the months, and when the test month is smaller, borrow 12 months from the years.
A child born on August 20, 2015 and tested on March 5, 2026 is 10;6;15.
That's 126 months, or 10;7 when 15 days or more rounds up.
Rounding rules differ between tests, so check your manual before you round.

What is a chronological age calculator?

A chronological age calculator finds the exact age on a test date, written as years;months;days. Test scores are compared with norms for each age band, so the age has to be right to the month.

It's the same idea as an ordinary age, with one difference: test manuals borrow 30 days for a month, whatever the real month's length.

How to use the chronological age calculator

You need the date of birth and the test date.

Work out chronological age0/5

The dates stay in your browser.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads when you press Try an example: born August 20, 2015, tested March 5, 2026.

The child is 10 years, 6 months and 15 days old: 10;6;15. In months that's 126, and rounded it's 10;7.

Rounding, and why it matters

Norm tables usually come in bands of a few months, so a single day can move a score into the next band.

Some tests round 15 days up

With that rule, 10;6;15 becomes 10;7.

Some tests never round

They use 10;6 and drop the days. The calculator shows both, and the manual decides.

Some tests use months only

They want 126 months. That's the age in months card.

Mistakes to avoid

These slips are the ones that move a score into the wrong table.

  • Borrowing the real number of days in a month instead of 30
  • Subtracting in the wrong order (always test date minus birth date)
  • Rounding when the manual says not to
  • Writing the date in the wrong format on the form

For an ordinary age in real calendar months, use the age calculator.

Who is the chronological age calculator for?

It's for anyone who scores tests by age, and these tools help around it.

Check every form against the table, and the norm band takes care of itself.

Chronological Age Calculator FAQs

Questions about the chronological age calculator? Here's what to know.

A chronological age calculator finds a person's exact age on a test date in years, months and days.

This free one shows the subtraction step by step, the age in months and the rounded age.

Subtract the date of birth from the test date, days first.

Borrow 30 days from the months when you need to, and 12 months from the years.

As years;months;days, like 10;6;15.

Some forms use years;months only, like 10;6.

It's the rule most test manuals set, so every examiner gets the same answer.

The real month length would give different results for the same child.

It depends on the test.

Some round 15 days or more up to the next month, some never round, so check the manual.

The years × 12 plus the months, with the days left off.

10;6;15 is 126 months.

Chronological age borrows 30 days for every month, as test manuals do.

An ordinary age counts real calendar months.

Most standardized tests with age norms, like IQ, language, reading and development tests.

Each test's manual says how it wants the age written and rounded.
