This free SMART goal generator turns something you want into a SMART goal: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

Say what you want, set where you are and where you want to be, pick a deadline, and plan your weeks.

Each letter is checked as you type, and your goal card shows the pace it takes and the milestones on the way.

Here's what SMART stands for, examples for every part of life, and how to write a goal you'll actually reach.

Key takeaways

SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
A SMART goal has one number to track, a start and a target, and a deadline.
Weekly actions, with the days and hours they take, make a goal achievable.
An if-then plan for what could get in the way makes you more likely to follow through.

What is a SMART goal generator?

A SMART goal generator turns a rough goal into a SMART one, by asking for each part a SMART goal needs.

This one checks each letter as you fill it in, works out the pace and the milestones, and puts your weekly actions in your calendar.

How to write a SMART goal

Write your goal in 5 steps, one for each letter:

Then add your weekly actions to your calendar, so the goal has a place in your week.

Why an if-then plan helps

A goal usually fails on a specific day, for a specific reason. An if-then plan decides in advance what you'll do when that happens: "If it rains, then I'll run on the treadmill."

Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer's research on these plans, which he calls implementation intentions, found they make people more likely to follow through.
