A text summarizer turns a long text into a short one that keeps only the main points.

This free text summarizer writes two summaries at once, as a few sentences, one paragraph, key points or a single line, in the language you pick.

Each summary shows how long it is next to your original, so you know how much it cut.

What is a text summarizer?

A text summarizer is a tool that shortens a text to its main points in new words.

Purdue's writing lab says a summary includes "only the main point(s)" and is "significantly shorter than the original".

How to summarize a text

The lengths

Pick the one that fits where it's going:

LengthWhat you get
One lineA single sentence, the takeaway
Short2 or 3 sentences
One paragraphA full paragraph
Key pointsA list, one point a line
DetailedAbout a third as long as the text

Every summary keeps the facts and numbers it uses as the text gives them.

How each version is scored

Every version is checked in your browser the moment it comes back, with no AI:

  • Length – how long it is next to your original, as a percentage.
  • Reads human – the engine behind my AI slop checker, which counts the patterns that give AI writing away.
  • Real-post numbers – pick what you're writing, and its sentence length and reading grade show next to real blog posts, newsletters or LinkedIn and X posts I measured.

So you can pick the version that reads like a person and fits where it's going.

A real example

Here's the article from the Try button, 129 words on how remote work changed hiring. The first summary it wrote, at the Short length:

Remote work reshaped hiring after 2020, expanding recruitment from local areas to nationwide and even global talent pools, giving people in smaller towns access to jobs that previously required relocation.

This shift also introduced challenges such as coordinating across time zones, reduced on-the-job learning for new hires, and difficulties for managers in assessing unseen work.

As a result, many firms now adopt hybrid models, combining office days with remote work.

It came out at 56% of the original's length and scored 100 for reading human. For a tighter version, pick One line or Key points.

Summarize or paraphrase?

They're easy to mix up, so here's how they differ:

Summarizing videos and podcasts

This one takes text. For a video or a podcast, my YouTube video summarizer and podcast summarizer read the transcript and summarize it with timestamps.

Who is the text summarizer for?

It's for anyone with more to read than time:

And if you write long posts, a one-line summary makes a good opening line.

Take it further

Want rewriting inside the apps you already write in, or a longer conversation about your text? These go further.
