What is an AI slop checker?
An AI slop checker is a tool that finds the habits that make writing read as AI (stock phrases, staged sentences, rhythm by rule, decoration and chatbot leftovers) and shows each one in your text with why it reads that way and how to fix it.
I built mine because I read a lot of drafts, including my own, and "this feels like AI" never helps anyone fix a sentence. A named pattern on a line does.
How the AI slop checker works
- Paste your text. The check runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is sent anywhere.
- Every tell is marked in your text. A strong tell counts on one sighting; a weak one counts only when other tells share its paragraph, because a careful writer uses any one of them on purpose sometimes.
- You get a score per 1,000 words and a verdict, from "reads like a person" to "reads as AI, strongly".
- Each kind of tell comes with why it reads as AI, where it is, and the fix.
- The outline test lists the first sentence of every paragraph. If they read like a tidy summary, the piece was assembled, not written.
The tells it looks for
It checks 301 patterns and 11 checks of structure. The main kinds:

Some tells fade as models change. Words that marked 2023 drafts count for half now, and a spaced en dash doesn't count at all, because people used it long before AI.
Your voice changes what counts
Paste two or three things you wrote yourself, and the checker measures your voice here in the browser: your sentence length, punctuation and the phrases you use. Then it stops flagging what you do yourself. If you love bold and em dashes, they're yours, not a tell.
I tested it on my own writing. My essays from 2014 to 2018 score 2 to 7 per 1,000 words, and half my emails score 0. The posts I drafted with AI tools in the last two years score 33 to 97.
