Graphemes, the characters you see, as the Bluesky protocol counts them: an emoji with a skin tone is 1.

This free Bluesky character counter checks your post against Bluesky's 300-character limit, counted the way the Bluesky protocol counts. That 300 sits between X's 280 and Threads' 500, so a post can fit on X and still be too long for Bluesky, or the other way around.
It shows every other platform beside it, so you can see where else the same post fits.
Here's Bluesky's limit, how it compares to X, and how to post the same thing everywhere.
Bluesky's character limit
| Text | Limit | How it counts |
|---|---|---|
| 300 | Graphemes, the characters you see |
The 300 comes from the AT Protocol's own post record, the specification Bluesky runs on. It counts graphemes: the characters you see.
So an emoji with a skin tone, or a family emoji, counts as 1, not as the several pieces it's built from.
Bluesky vs X
- Emoji: X counts most emoji as 2, Bluesky counts them as 1.
- Links: X counts every link as 23, while this counter counts a link's full length on Bluesky.
- The limit: 300 on Bluesky, 280 on X.
That's why the same post can pass on one and fail on the other. Check both before you post.
Post it everywhere
The counter above checks the same post on every platform at once, and each has its own page too: X, LinkedIn, Threads, Mastodon, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube.
When it's ready, turn it into an image for the feeds that want one with my post image generator, and schedule it with the tools on my creator tools page.

Bluesky Character Counter FAQs
Questions about Bluesky's character limits? Here's what to know.
The Bluesky character limit is 300 characters per post, as the AT Protocol's post record defines it. It counts graphemes, the characters you see.
Yes, an emoji counts as 1 character on Bluesky, because Bluesky counts graphemes: even an emoji with a skin tone or a family emoji is 1.
A post can fit on X but not on Bluesky because the 2 count differently. X counts a link as 23 and most emoji as 2, while the counter counts a link's full length on Bluesky, and the limits are 280 and 300.
Yes, you can post to Bluesky from Claude with my open source Bluesky MCP server and CLI, linked under this post.
No, nothing you type leaves your browser: the counting runs on your device, and your draft is kept in this browser only.
The Bluesky character counter is for anyone posting on Bluesky, and anyone cross-posting from X or Threads who wants to know the post fits before it goes out.
