A free skill generator that writes Agent Skills for Claude Code, the Claude apps and Codex, with a graded description and test prompts.
This free skill generator writes an Agent Skill for Claude Code, the Claude apps and Codex: a folder with a SKILL.md file that teaches your AI agent one job.
Pick the kind of skill, name it, say when it should load, and write the steps. The description is graded as you type, because it decides when the agent picks your skill.
Here's what a skill is, how it differs from CLAUDE.md, and how to write one that loads at the right time.
Key takeaways
What is a skill generator?
A skill generator writes the files for an Agent Skill from a few fields, in the format the agents read.
This one starts from the sections each kind of skill needs, checks the result against the rules in Anthropic's docs, Codex's docs and the open Agent Skills spec, and zips the folder for you.
What is an Agent Skill?
An Agent Skill is a folder that teaches an AI agent one job, like writing commit messages, reviewing code or following a brand's style.
The agent loads it in 3 stages, so you can install many skills without filling its memory:
That's why a vague description is the most common reason a skill never loads.
Skills vs CLAUDE.md vs prompts
Each one does a different job, and the best setups use all 3:
- What it holds
- Who you are and how to work in this project
- When the agent reads it
- At the start of every session
- What it holds
- How to do one specific job
- When the agent reads it
- Only when a request needs it
- What it holds
- What to do right now
- When the agent reads it
- Once, in that chat
Keep the agent file short, and give the agent a skill for each job you repeat.
The anatomy of a great skill
A skill is a folder named after the skill, with these parts:
SKILL.md
The name and description up top, then the instructions
references/
Long detail the agent reads only when it needs it
scripts/
Code the agent runs instead of writing it each time
assets/
Templates and files the skill uses
Only SKILL.md is required. Keep it under 500 lines, and link each reference file straight from it, one level deep.
How to write a description that loads at the right time
The description is what the agent matches each request against, so write it for that moment:
- Say what the skill does and when to use it
- Write it in the third person, like "Processes Excel files", never "I can help you"
- Use the words people say when they need it: file types, tool names, tasks
- Stay under 1,024 characters, or 200 for the Claude apps
A description like "Helps with documents" never loads at the right time, because it matches everything and nothing.
5 kinds of skills and when to use each
Most skills fit one of these kinds, and the generator starts each one with its own sections:
Step-by-step workflow
A job done the same way each time, with a checklist to tick off
Brand or writing style
Rules and examples for how something should read or look
Checklist review
What to check, how serious each problem is, and the report
A tool or an API
How to use one tool, its commands and its gotchas
Making a document
A template to fill in, the steps and the checks

How to test and install a skill
Test a skill before you rely on it:
In Claude Code, a skill goes in ~/.claude/skills for all your projects, or .claude/skills in one project. Codex reads ~/.agents/skills or .agents/skills, and the Claude apps take the zip under Customize, then Skills.
Who is the skill generator for?
The skill generator is for anyone who repeats a job with an AI agent, and it works well with my other tools:
- AI prompt generator – for a one-off prompt when a job doesn't need a skill
- DESIGN.md generator – for a design file your agent follows when it builds pages
- AI slop checker – for checking the writing your skill helps produce
Your skill stays in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

Questions about Agent Skills? Here's what to know.
A skill generator writes the files for an Agent Skill from a few fields, in the format AI agents read.
This one also checks the result and zips the folder.
An Agent Skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that teaches an AI agent one job.
The agent loads it only when a request matches its description.
CLAUDE.md loads at the start of every session and says how to work in a project.
A skill loads only when a request needs it and says how to do one job.
Put the skill's folder in ~/.claude/skills to use it in all your projects, or in .claude/skills inside one project.
Yes.
The SKILL.md format is an open standard, and Codex reads skills from ~/.agents/skills or .agents/skills.
Keep it under 500 lines, as Anthropic's docs advise.
Move long detail into reference files the skill links to.
The limit is 1,024 characters, and Claude's help asks for 200 at most in the Claude apps.
Usually the description is too vague or misses the words people use.
Add what the skill does, when to use it and the key terms, then test it again.
Yes.
It's free, with no account and no limit.
No.
Everything you type stays in your browser, and the zip is made there too.
