This free tile calculator works out how many tiles a floor, a wall or a backsplash takes, for any tile size.

It adds extra for cuts and spares, and counts the boxes.

I built it because tiles are sold by the box but laid 1 by 1, and the cut tiles at the edges add up.

Here's the formula, a worked example, and the mistakes to avoid.

Key takeaways

Tiles = the area + extra for cuts, ÷ 1 tile's area, rounded up.
A 12 by 12 inch tile covers 1 square foot, and so does a 6 by 24 inch tile.
An 8 by 6 foot floor with 12 inch tiles and 10% extra takes 53 tiles.
Boxes = tiles ÷ the tiles in a box, rounded up: 4 boxes of 15.

What is a tile calculator?

A tile calculator turns the size of a floor or wall into the tiles and boxes to buy.

It works for any tile size, in inches or centimeters.

How tiles are counted

A square foot is 144 square inches, so a tile's area in square feet is width × height ÷ 144.

12 × 12 in
Square feet each

Tiles for 100 sq ft

12 × 24 in
Square feet each

6 × 24 in

2.25
Tiles for 100 sq ft

3 × 6 in
Square feet each
0.125

The count uses the tile's own size, so the grout lines leave a little spare.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: an 8 by 6 foot floor, 12 by 12 inch tiles, 10% extra and 15 tiles a box.

8 × 6 = 48 square feet. + 10% = 52.8. Each tile covers 1 square foot, so 53 tiles. 53 ÷ 15 = 3.5, so 4 boxes.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Mixing the tile's inches with the room's feet
  • Buying no spares for repairs later
  • Rounding the boxes down instead of up

Who is the tile calculator for?

It's for anyone tiling a bathroom, a kitchen or a floor, and these tools help around it.

Count the tiles first, and the last row won't come up short.
