This free ideal weight calculator shows your ideal weight by four published formulas, Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi, side by side. It puts them next to the healthy BMI range for your height, with your own weight marked.

I built it because each formula gives a different answer, and seeing only one makes it look more exact than it is. Seen together, they make a range you can aim for.

Here's where each formula comes from, how they differ, and how to pick a goal weight that suits you.

Key takeaways

The four formulas each start from a weight at 5 feet and add a set amount for every inch above it.
For a woman at 165 cm, they range from 56.4 kg (Hamwi) to 59.8 kg (Miller).
For a man at 178 cm, they range from 70.4 kg (Miller) to 75.2 kg (Hamwi).
The healthy BMI range at 165 cm is wider, 50.4 to 67.8 kg.
None of them count muscle or frame, so treat them as a range, not a target to the kg.

What is an ideal weight calculator?

An ideal weight calculator estimates a healthy weight from your height and sex. The formulas came from medicine, where a quick estimate of lean weight helps set drug doses.

Each formula is a base weight at 5 feet, plus kg for each inch over it.

How to use the ideal weight calculator

You only need your sex and height, and every health calculator here shares them.

The four formulas

Here's each formula, in kg at 5 feet plus kg per inch over it.

Devine (1974)
Men
50 + 2.3 an inch
Women
45.5 + 2.3 an inch
Robinson (1983)
Men
52 + 1.9 an inch
Women
49 + 1.7 an inch
Miller (1983)
Men
56.2 + 1.41 an inch
Women
53.1 + 1.36 an inch
Hamwi (1964)
Men
48 + 2.7 an inch
Women
45.5 + 2.2 an inch

Devine's is the one used most in medicine. Miller's starts higher and climbs slower, so it gives more at short heights and less at tall ones.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads when you press Try an example.

A woman is 165 cm tall, about 5 feet 5 inches, and weighs 68 kg.

FormulaIdeal weight
Devine56.9 kg
Robinson57.4 kg
Miller59.8 kg
Hamwi56.4 kg

The formulas put her between 56.4 and 59.8 kg. The healthy BMI range at her height is 50.4 to 67.8 kg, and at 68 kg she's just above it.

How to pick your goal weight

The formulas give a range, and a few things move you within it.

Your frame and muscle

A strong, broad person sits well above the formulas and can be very healthy. The body fat calculator shows what your weight is made of.

The healthy BMI range

It's wider than the formulas, so it's a good outer limit. The BMI calculator shows yours.

How you feel and perform

A weight you can keep while you train, sleep and eat well beats a lower number you can't.

Mistakes to avoid

These make an ideal weight a bad goal.

  • Treating one formula's number as exact
  • Ignoring muscle, so a lean, strong person aims too low
  • Picking a goal under the healthy BMI range
  • Rushing toward the goal with too few calories

Pick a range, then use the calorie calculator to get there slowly.

Strength over a number

What your weight is made of matters more than the number.
