A free unzip tool that opens ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR files in your browser, passwords included, with nothing uploaded.
Drop a ZIP, RAR, 7z or TAR file and get the files inside. It all happens in this browser.

Everything happens in this browser, with 7-Zip compiled for the web, so your files and passwords never leave your computer.
This free unzip tool opens ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR and GZ files in your browser, passwords included. Download the files one by one, or save them all to a folder.
It runs 7-Zip, compiled for the web, so it opens nearly any archive and checks every file. Nothing is uploaded.
Here's what it opens, how passwords work, and how it compares with CloudConvert.
Key takeaways
What is an unzip tool?
An unzip tool opens an archive, a single file that holds other files, and gives you back the files inside.
ZIP is the most common, and every computer opens it. RAR, 7z and TAR.GZ need an extra app, or a tool like this one.
What it opens
Nearly every archive you'll meet:
- What it is
- The archive every computer opens
- Opens here
- Yes, passwords too
- What it is
- WinRAR's format, RAR5 included
- Opens here

- 7-Zip's format, often the smallest

- What it is
- Linux and Mac bundles
- Opens here
- Yes, all the way to the files
- What it is
- Single compressed files

- Disc images and installers

A TAR.GZ opens in one go: the tool unpacks the GZ, then the TAR inside, and lists the files.
Every file's checksum is checked as it comes out, so a damaged archive says so instead of giving you broken files.
Passwords
A ZIP, RAR or 7z with a password asks for it before it opens. An archive that hides its file names shows nothing until you type it.
A wrong password is caught, and your password stays in this browser.
Save all to a folder
In Chrome and Edge, Save all to a folder writes every file into a folder you pick, subfolders and all. In other browsers, download the files one by one, or all of them as one ZIP.
Mac's hidden files left out
A ZIP made on a Mac often carries hidden files: a __MACOSX folder, files starting with ._, and .DS_Store. They hold Finder notes nobody else needs.
This tool leaves them out, so what you get is the files you meant to share.
Compared with CloudConvert
I ran a RAR5 archive and a password-protected 7z through this tool and through CloudConvert's archive converter on September 30, 2026. Both opened them, and both ZIPs held every file.
CloudConvert took 2.5 and 2.9 seconds, with the upload. This tool took under a second in the browser, after its engine loaded the first time.
The difference that matters is the password: with CloudConvert, it goes to their server with your file. Here, neither leaves your computer.
Nothing is uploaded
The tool runs 7-Zip, the open-source archiver, compiled for the web, in your browser. Your files and your passwords never leave your computer.
The first time, the engine downloads, about 1.7 MB. After that it starts at once.
What it can't open
A few archives don't work here:
- Archives split into parts – like .part1.rar, or .z01 and .zip together. Join them in a desktop app first.
- Very big archives – a browser tab has a few GB of memory. A 10 GB archive needs a desktop app.
- Damaged archives – the checksum check says so, and names the error.
For those, 7-Zip itself on Windows, or The Unarchiver on a Mac, does the job.
Who is the unzip tool for?
It's for anyone who gets archives they can't open:
- Compress PDF – people sending documents by email
- Compress image – anyone whose photos are too big to send
- Merge PDF – people putting scans together before sharing
- Image converter – anyone preparing photos to share
Students and support teams use it on computers where they can't install apps.
More free file tools
Here are my other zip tools, and two for files that are too big:
- Zip files – files and folders into one ZIP
- RAR to ZIP – a RAR or 7z as a ZIP anyone can open
- Compress PDF – a smaller PDF before you zip it
- Compress image – photos too big to send
They're all free, in your browser, with no sign-up.
