What is an image compressor?
An image compressor makes an image file smaller, and keeps it looking the same.
Each format gets its own engine here. PNGs have their colors cut to what the eye needs, JPGs are written with Google's JPEGli, and WebP and AVIF with their own encoders.
HEIC photos come back as JPGs, since few apps open HEIC.

The PNG compressor made the smallest file of every tool I tested, CloudConvert and TinyPNG included.

How I tested
I tested on September 29, 2026. The files were the same screenshots, graphics and photos behind each format's own page.
The score is SSIMULACRA 2, a metric from Cloudinary that compares two pictures the way your eye does:

| 80 to 90 | Same side by side at 100% |
| 70 to 80 | High quality: hard to notice without comparing |
| 50 to 70 | Medium quality: you can see it up close |
| Under 50 | Visible loss |
Pick the right format
PNG is for screenshots, logos and graphics, and JPG, WebP and AVIF are for photos.
A photo saved as PNG can shrink 90% as a JPG, and the compressor offers that when it sees one.
