What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the format iPhones save photos in. It holds the same photo in about half the space of a JPG, but Windows, many websites and older apps can't open it.

This converter's JPGs were 30% to 54% smaller than CloudConvert's, and scored 4.5 to 5.8 points lower, from 79.6 to 82.9. That's around the line where a photo looks the same side by side at 100%.
Part of the gap is the decoder: an iPhone photo stores its color at half size, and Apple and your browser fill it in differently. Against its own decode, as this converter scores it, each JPG scored 83 to 86.
CloudConvert saves at a higher quality than a photo needs, so its files come out bigger. If you want the most detail, pick Lossless PNG in the settings instead.
How I tested
I tested on September 29, 2026. I saved 3 pictures as HEIC with macOS's own encoder, at quality 80: the 29-megapixel golden retriever photo, a dark 6-megapixel portrait and Kodak test photo 23.
The score is SSIMULACRA 2, a metric from Cloudinary that compares two pictures the way your eye does:
