What is a JPG to WebP converter?

Why convert JPG to WebP?
WebP is Google's image format for websites. Every current browser shows it, and it usually holds the same photo in less space than JPG.
A JPG was already compressed once, so converting can't bring back detail. The converter keeps the photo as close as it can, and never hands back a bigger file.

I converted the same JPG files here and with CloudConvert, at each one's default settings. Then I scored every result against its original:

On the big photo, both came out the same: 7.8 MB at a score of 70.7.
On the portrait this converter kept more detail in a bigger file, and on the 6-megapixel photo it made the smaller file at a lower score.
That 29-megapixel photo is full of fine fur and camera noise, which WebP can't hold in less space.
At the usual quality its WebP came out bigger than the JPG, so the converter lowered the quality until it fit, and said so on the file.
How I tested
I tested on September 29, 2026. The JPGs were a 29-megapixel golden retriever photo, the same photo at 6 megapixels, and a dark 6-megapixel portrait.
The score is SSIMULACRA 2, a metric from Cloudinary that compares two pictures the way your eye does:
