What is a broken link checker?
A broken link checker is a tool that follows the links on a website and reports the ones that don't work.
Mine reads up to 100 pages of your site and checks every kind of link on them: links to your own pages and to other sites, images, scripts, styles, embeds and video.
How to check your site for broken links
What the results mean
Every link gets 1 of 4 results:
- Works – it answered, directly or after a redirect.
- Broken – it answered with an error (like a 404 or 500), or the site doesn't exist anymore.
- Redirects – it works, but goes through another address first.
- Couldn't check – the site turns robots away (LinkedIn does), or didn't answer twice. It may work fine in a browser.
The score is the share of links that work, out of the ones it could check. A site that blocks robots never counts against you.
How to fix broken links
Start with links to your own pages. Point each at the page that replaced it, or redirect the dead address there.
For links to other sites, find the page's new address, link to a copy on the Internet Archive, or remove the link.
Then update links that redirect, so they point straight at where they land. It saves a round trip for every reader and every crawler.
How often to check
Check after any big change, like a redesign, new menus or moving pages. Otherwise, once a month catches links that died on other sites.
