What is a redirect checker?
A redirect checker is a tool that follows an address the way a browser does, and shows every redirect on the way to the final page.
Mine fetches each hop by hand, so you see every status code, where it points, how long it took, and the server that answered.
How to check a redirect
Redirect status codes
Each hop answers with a status code that says what kind of move it is:
- 301 and 308 – moved for good. Search engines move the old address's standing to the new one.
- 302 and 307 – moved for now. Search engines may keep the old address.
- 303 – see another page, often after a form is sent.
- 200 – the page itself, the end of the path.
Use a 301 or 308 for any move that's for good.
What the checker looks for
It checks 7 things: that the address reaches a working page, how many redirects it takes, whether they're permanent, that http goes to https, that all 4 versions end at 1 address, that every version answers, and that no redirect hides inside the page.
It also catches loops, where 2 redirects point at each other and the page never loads.
How to fix redirect problems
Most fixes are 1 setting at your host. Point every version at 1 address, with or without www, over https, in 1 hop.
Then update links on your own site to the final address, so visitors skip the redirect.
