Why the pieces are 3:4
Instagram's profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 tile, taller than it is wide. I measured it on 2 big public profiles on September 26, 2026: 3 tiles across, 310.7 by 414.2 pixels each, 1 pixel apart.
The grid center-crops every post to fill its tile. So a piece in another shape loses its edges there:

The post itself still shows the whole piece when someone taps it. Only the grid crops it.
What size your picture should be
For a 3 × 3 grid of 3:4 pieces, use a picture of at least 3,240 by 4,320 pixels. Each row needs 1,440 pixels of height.
A smaller picture still works, but the pieces get blown up and look soft. The tool tells you when that happens, and the size it needs.
Post the pieces in the right order
The newest post sits top left. So post the bottom-right piece first and the top-left piece last.
The files are numbered in that order, and 01 goes up first. The preview shows the number on every piece.
3 things that break a grid
A grid puzzle stays together only while nothing moves it:
- Pinned posts. Instagram lets you pin up to 3 posts at the top of your grid. With 1 or 2 pinned, every piece moves over, so unpin them or pin 3.
- A post in the middle. Any other post between the pieces shifts everything after it. Post the pieces back to back.
- Posts after it. A new post pushes the puzzle along by one place. Post in threes and the picture stays in its columns.
