This free long division calculator divides whole numbers the long way, with every step written out, and marks the decimals that repeat.

It shows the quotient, the remainder and the decimal, so it fits whichever form your homework asks for.

I built it because most calculators jump to a decimal, and long division is about the steps in between.

Here's the method, a worked example, and how to spot a repeating decimal.

Key takeaways

Long division goes digit by digit from the left: divide, multiply, take away, bring down.
1,234 ÷ 7 = 176 remainder 2.
As a decimal, 1,234 ÷ 7 = 176.285714…, with 285714 repeating forever.
A remainder you've seen before means the decimals repeat from there.
A zero in the middle of the answer is a real step: 1,050 ÷ 5 = 210.

What is a long division calculator?

A long division calculator divides 1 whole number by another and shows each step of the paper method.

It's for checking homework, teaching the method, or finding a remainder.

How long division works

Each step repeats the same 4 moves.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: 1,234 ÷ 7.

7 goes into 12 once (7), leaving 5. Bring down 3: 7 goes into 53 seven times (49), leaving 4. Bring down 4: 7 goes into 44 six times (42), leaving 2.

So it's 176 remainder 2. Carry on with zeros and the remainders cycle, so the decimal is 176.285714 repeating.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that cost marks.

  • Skipping a 0 in the answer when the divisor doesn't go in
  • Bringing down 2 digits at once
  • Writing a remainder bigger than the divisor

Who is the long division calculator for?

It's for students, parents and teachers, and these tools help around it.

Follow the 4 moves, and any division works out.
