This free wallpaper calculator works out how many rolls a room takes, from the roll's width, length and pattern repeat.

It counts strips, the way you hang it, rather than dividing areas, so the pattern repeat is counted.

I built it because the area method comes up short on patterned paper, where each strip loses a little to line the pattern up.

Here's the method, a worked example, and the mistakes to avoid.

Key takeaways

Each strip is the wall height plus 1 pattern repeat.
A roll gives as many full strips as fit in its length.
Strips needed = the room's perimeter ÷ the roll's width, rounded up.
A 12 by 10 foot room with 8 foot walls and rolls 20.5 inches wide and 33 feet long takes 9 rolls with a 21 inch repeat, or 7 with none.

What is a wallpaper calculator?

A wallpaper calculator turns a room's size and the roll's label into the rolls to buy.

It works in feet and inches, or meters and centimeters.

How wallpaper is counted

Strips are counted at full height, doors and windows included, which leaves spare for the pieces around them.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: a 12 by 10 foot room, 8 foot walls, rolls 20.5 inches wide and 33 feet long, and a 21 inch repeat.

The perimeter is 44 feet, or 528 inches. 528 ÷ 20.5 = 25.8, so 26 strips. Each strip is 9.75 feet, so a roll gives 3. 26 ÷ 3 = 8.7, so 9 rolls.

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Dividing the wall area by the roll's area
  • Forgetting the pattern repeat
  • Rounding the strips a roll gives up instead of down

Who is the wallpaper calculator for?

It's for anyone papering a room or a feature wall, and these tools help around it.

Count by strips, and the pattern lines up to the last roll.
