50 ways to make money from home in 2026, with what each pays

50 ways to make money from home, from no-experience work and freelance skills to selling and building your own business, each with what it pays and how to start.

Navid Moazzezby Navid Moazzez·Updated 3 oct 2026·38 min read·

To make money from home, you earn without a commute, at your desk or kitchen table, for clients, customers or an audience anywhere.

I've worked from home since November 2014, when my first virtual summit paid enough for me to quit my bank job. Home has been an apartment in Cancun, Barcelona, London and now Panama City. I've made money from those desks with summits, courses, affiliate promotions, consulting and software.

Most work-from-home ways need only a laptop, an internet connection and a quiet hour. The hard part is picking one that fits your skills and your day, and knowing what it really pays.

So every way below shows what it pays, with the source, what you need to start and how fast you get paid.

In this guide, you'll learn:

  • What you need to make money from home
  • 50 ways to make money from home, grouped by what you have, each with what it pays, how to start, the tools and the mistakes to avoid
  • The ways that fit around kids and a busy home
  • How to spot work-from-home scams
  • How to set up to get paid, from a payment account to taxes

Start with the group that matches you today: no experience, a skill, something to sell, something to build, an interest in AI, or space in your home.

Key takeaways

The quickest money from home comes from selling a skill you already have, like writing, design or admin, to clients online.
The most lasting money comes from something you own, like a product, a channel or an email list. Mine is the reason I've worked from home since 2014.
Many from-home ways cost nothing to start. On Upwork, the median rate runs from $13 an hour for virtual assistants (Upwork) to $55 for voice actors (Upwork).
No real work-from-home job asks you to pay for training or equipment first. Those offers are scams.
You need a way to get paid and a simple record of what you earn, since US side income is taxable (IRS).

What do you need to make money from home?

Less than you'd think. For most of the ways below, this is the full list:

A laptop and a phone

Most ways run on a computer, and the phone covers calls and apps.

Reliable internet

It needs to be fast enough for video calls and uploads.

A quiet corner

You need somewhere to work and take calls.

A way to get paid

PayPal, Stripe or a bank account will do.

A few protected hours

Block time each week that work and family can't take.

Extras for some ways

Video needs a camera, voice work a microphone, and renting a spare room.

Each way below says what it needs to start.

How I've worked from home since 2014

My first summit, The Branding Summit, made over $20,000 in 2014. I quit my bank job on November 28, 2014, the same day I made over $5,000 in all-access pass sales, and I've worked from home ever since.

My course Virtual Summit Mastery, which I sold from home through ThriveCart, made well over $1 million before I sold it. Home is where I've built everything since, and the ways below are the ones I'd look at if I were starting again.

Ways to make money from home with no experience

These need no special skill, and most are free to start. They pay less per hour than a skill, but you can begin this week while you learn one.

1. Test websites and apps

What it pays: a fee per test. UserTesting sends each payment to PayPal 14 days after you upload the test (UserTesting).

You use a website or app at your desk and say out loud what you think. A quiet room is the only real requirement.

It fits you if you can talk through what you're doing while you click.

Watch: Shane Hummus walks through getting started on UserTesting.

How to start0/3

Tools: UserTesting for tests and Respondent for paid research interviews. A headset makes your recordings clear.

Mistakes to avoid:

  • Taking tests in a noisy room. Background noise makes your test hard to use.
  • Going quiet. Your comments are what they pay for.

Start: free · Time: under 5 hours a week · On camera: optional · From anywhere: yes · Experience: none needed · Paid: by PayPal, 14 days after each test · Age: 18+ for PayPal in the US

2. Join paid research studies

What it pays: a fee per interview, survey or focus group. Respondent shows an average payout of $75 per study, paid 48 hours after the session (Respondent).

Researchers pay to interview people with your job, hobbies or buying habits, over video from your home.

It fits you if your job or life matches the people companies want to hear from.

How to start0/3

Tools: Respondent and a laptop with a camera.

Mistakes to avoid:

  • Missing sessions. Researchers rate you.

Start: free · Time: under 5 hours a week · On camera: yes · From anywhere: yes · Experience: none needed · Paid: 48 hours after each session

3. Help train AI

What it pays: pay per hour. DataAnnotation lists $25 to $50 an hour for generalists and $40 to $150+ an hour for coders and other experts (DataAnnotation). Demand is real: freelancer earnings from AI data annotation and labeling grew 154% on Upwork in 2025 (Upwork).

AI companies pay people to rate and fix the answers their models give. It's desk work you can do in short sessions, any time of day.

It fits you if you write clearly and know a subject well.

How to start0/3

Tools: the platforms themselves, plus a second monitor if you have one.

Mistakes to avoid:

Ways to make money from home that fit around kids

If you're at home with kids, short and flexible tasks fit best. These can stop and start around naps and school runs:

Live calls, like tutoring, coaching and customer support shifts, need protected time, so book them when you have help.

Work-from-home scams to avoid

Work-from-home offers attract scammers. Americans reported $15.9 billion lost to fraud in 2025 (FTC), and job and business opportunity scams took $750.6 million in 2024 (FTC).

Walk away from these:

  • A job that asks you to pay for training, software or equipment first.
  • A check for equipment with a request to send part of it back.
  • Envelope stuffing, product assembly or reshipping packages from home.
  • A task app where you deposit money to unlock bigger tasks.
  • A recruiter who only talks by text and offers a job without an interview.

Real work-from-home jobs never ask you to pay to get paid.

How to set up to get paid from home

You don't need a company to start, but a little setup saves trouble later:

Talk to an accountant once the money grows. I'm not a tax advisor, and the rules where you live may differ.

FAQs about making money from home

Answers to the questions people ask most about making money from home.

Testing websites, joining paid research studies, data entry, transcription and virtual assistant work need no experience.

They pay less per hour than a skill, but you can start this week.

Pick one, and learn a skill on the side that pays more.

Freelancing a skill, tutoring, testing websites and selling printables on Etsy all start free or close to it.

Etsy charges $0.20 to list an item, so a printables shop costs almost nothing to open.

Every way in this guide shows what it costs to start.

Short, flexible work fits best: testing websites, AI training tasks, transcription and selling digital products.

Freelance writing and design run on deadlines rather than set hours.

Save live calls, like tutoring, for when you have help.

Many platforms set age rules: Upwork requires you to be 18, while Fiverr and Etsy let 13 to 17 year olds sell through a parent's account.

Stripe lets teens open an account with an adult on it.

Selling art, printables or designs through a parent's account is a good place to start.

Selling a skill pays fastest, and building something you own pays longest.

On Upwork, the median rate is $30 an hour for copywriters and $50 for grant writers.

The best way is the one that fits your skills and the hours you have.

Many are, including remote jobs, freelance work on Upwork and Fiverr, and testing on UserTesting.

Avoid any job that asks you to pay for training, equipment or a starter kit.

Real jobs never ask you to pay to get paid.

Most side hustlers make a little: the median is $200 a month, according to Bankrate.

Freelancers in high-paying skills charge $50 an hour or more on Upwork.

A business of your own can earn far more over time, like my summits did.

Never pay for training, software or equipment to get a job.

Be careful with checks you're asked to deposit and partly send back, and with jobs offered by text without an interview.

Americans reported $15.9 billion lost to fraud in 2025, according to the FTC.

Yes, almost every way in this guide needs only a computer and an internet connection.

Freelance skills, AI work, digital products and content all run on a laptop.

A few, like renting a room or boarding pets, use your home instead.

No, you can start as an individual with a PayPal or Stripe account.

Keep your side income separate, and record what you earn and spend.

In the US, self-employment tax applies once your net earnings reach $400 a year.

Final thoughts on making money from home

There are 50 ways to make money from home in this guide, and most of them cost nothing to start.

If you need money soon, sell a skill you already have. If you want to work from home for good, build something you own beside it, the way my summits did for me.
