This free recipe scaler scales any recipe up or down: paste the ingredient list, say how many it makes and how many you want, and every amount changes.

It rounds to measures you can use, like 1⅛ cups or 1½ teaspoons, and gives each known ingredient's weight in grams.

I built it because doubling a recipe in your head is easy, and scaling 24 cookies to 36 isn't. Most scalers also leave you with 0.375 cups, which no measuring cup has.

Here's how it works, a worked example, and what doesn't scale.

Key takeaways

Every amount is multiplied by the servings you want ÷ the servings the recipe makes.
Small amounts move to smaller measures: under ¼ cup becomes tablespoons, under 1 tablespoon teaspoons.
Amounts round to the nearest ⅛, ¼ or ⅓, the measures in a kitchen drawer.
Grams come from USDA FoodData Central's weight per cup for 40 common ingredients.
Baking time, pan size and eggs don't scale neatly, so check them yourself.

What is a recipe scaler?

A recipe scaler changes a recipe's amounts for a different number of servings.

It's the same as a recipe converter or resizer: you give it the recipe and the size you want, and it does the multiplying.

How to scale a recipe

You need the ingredient list and 2 numbers.

Scale a recipe0/5

It reads amounts like 1 1/2, 1½ and 0.75, and units like cups, tbsp, tsp, grams and ounces. A line without an amount, like "salt to taste", stays as it is.

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: chocolate chip cookies for 24, scaled to 36, which is × 1.5.

What doesn't scale

Some things change with size in ways a multiplier can't know.

  • Baking time: a bigger cake in a bigger pan needs a different time, so check it early
  • Pan size: a doubled batter in the same pan bakes thick and slow
  • Eggs: 1½ eggs means beating 2 and using three quarters, or rounding
  • Pots: a doubled stew needs a pot big enough to hold it

Who is the recipe scaler for?

It's for anyone cooking for more or fewer people, and these tools help around it.

Scale it, weigh it, and taste as you go.

Recipe Scaler FAQs

Questions about the recipe scaler? Here's what to know.

A recipe scaler changes a recipe's amounts for a different number of servings.

This free one reads your ingredient list and rounds to measures you can use.

Multiply every amount by the servings you want ÷ the servings it makes.

The scaler does it for each line.

Tap 2×, or type the same number of servings twice over, and every amount doubles.

Tap ½×, and small amounts move to smaller measures, like 1½ teaspoons instead of ½ tablespoon.

It often does, since a bigger or smaller pan cooks at a different speed.

Check it early and go by how it looks.

Beat the egg and use half of it by weight, about 25 g of a large egg, or round up.
