This free gas trip calculator works out a road trip's fuel cost from the distance, your fuel economy and the price of gas, and splits it between everyone in the car.
It also finds your real gas mileage from a fill-up.
It works in miles, mpg and dollars a gallon, or in km, L/100 km and any currency a liter.
I built it because I've split a lot of road trips with friends, and the "you owe me about $40" math never quite added up. This makes it exact, and it shows how much a thirstier car would cost.
Key takeaways
What is a gas trip calculator?
A gas trip calculator estimates the fuel a drive takes and what it costs. It needs 3 numbers: how far you're going, how much fuel your car uses, and what fuel costs.
This one is also a fuel cost calculator and a gas mileage calculator, since they answer the same questions.
How to use the gas trip calculator
You need the distance and your car's fuel economy.
To find your real mpg instead, switch to Gas mileage and type a fill-up.
A worked example
Here's the example the calculator loads when you press Try an example: 300 miles each way, there and back, at 28 mpg, split between 2 people.
600 miles ÷ 28 mpg = 21.4 gallons. At the US average of $4.47 a gallon, that's $95.68, or $47.84 each.
- Fuel economy
- 19.6 mpg
- Cost of the trip
- $136.68
- Fuel economy
- 26.1 mpg
- Cost of the trip
- $102.51
- Fuel economy
- 33.6 mpg
- Cost of the trip
- $79.73
- Fuel economy
- 47 mpg
- Cost of the trip
- $56.95
In km, 500 km each way at 7 L/100 km takes 70 L. At 1.80 a liter, that's 126, or 63 each.
Finding your real fuel economy
The number on the sticker is a test result, and your own driving gives the real one.
Fill up and reset
Fill the tank to the first click, and reset the trip meter.
Drive as normal
Drive until the tank is at least half empty.
Fill up again
Divide the miles by the gallons it took: 350 miles on 12 gallons is 29.2 mpg, or 8.1 L/100 km.
Mistakes to avoid
These are the ways a trip's fuel cost comes out low.
- Using the sticker mpg for a loaded car on the highway at speed
- Forgetting the drive home
- Leaving out tolls and parking, which aren't fuel but still get split
- Mixing US and UK gallons (a UK gallon is 4.55 liters, a US one 3.79)
Driving abroad, the currency converter turns the local price into yours, and the card fees abroad calculator shows what your card adds at the pump.
Who is the gas trip calculator for?
It's for road trips, commutes and anyone splitting a ride, and these tools help plan the rest.
- Currency converter – for fuel prices abroad
- Card fees abroad calculator – for what your card charges overseas
