Rate this tool

This free currency converter turns any amount into 158 currencies at the day's rates, official ones first, and shows how a rate moved over up to 10 years.

Type an amount, or a sum like 120 × 3, and pick 2 currencies. You get the result, the rate both ways, a chart you can scrub day by day, and the amount in the currencies you pick. The last rates stay in your browser, so it works offline too.

Here's where the rates come from, why they differ from your bank's, and how they fit with the other travel tools.

What is a currency converter?

A currency converter turns an amount in one currency into another at an exchange rate, and the rate it uses decides how useful it is.

This one uses reference rates: the rates central banks publish once a day, with no margin added. They're the fair middle of the market, so they're the right rate for comparing prices, planning a budget, or checking what your bank charged you.

Where the rates come from

Most rates are the European Central Bank's reference rates, which it publishes around 16:00 Central European Time on working days for 29 currencies against the euro.

Some currencies are held at a fixed rate by their central bank, so the converter uses that rate every day:

The Colombian peso uses Colombia's official rate, the TRM, which Banco de la República publishes every day. On weekends and on the European Central Bank's holidays there's no new rate, so the converter keeps the last one.

Every other currency, from the Afghan afghani to the Zambian kwacha, uses the day's rate from Exchange Rate API, a feed of market rates updated once a day. Those convert at today's rate, and the chart covers the ones with an official rate, going back up to 10 years.

How to use the currency converter

Convert an amount0/4

On your first visit, the converter starts on the currency of the country you're in. Your amount and currencies stay in this browser.

Reference rates and what your bank charges

Banks, card networks and exchange counters set their own rates, and most add a margin to the reference rate, plus fees. So what you pay or receive can differ from the rate here.

  • Compare what your bank or card converted with the rate here, for the same day
  • When a card terminal or cash machine abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, choose the local currency instead, which usually gets you the better rate
  • Check your card's foreign transaction fee before you travel

Sending money abroad

The rate here is the mid-market rate. When you send money, what arrives depends on the service: each one adds a fee, a markup on the rate, or both.

So under the result, the converter shows what the best money transfer services deliver for your amount, from real quotes, each with a button to its site. The money transfer comparison ranks every bank and service for your route.

On 12 common routes on September 27, 2026, Wise, Instarem, Remitly and Western Union were in the top five most often. I use Wise myself.

Questions about exchange rates? Here's what to know.

A currency converter turns an amount in one currency into another at an exchange rate.

This one covers 158 currencies at the day's rates, official ones first, with a chart of up to 10 years for the currencies with an official rate.

From the European Central Bank's reference rates, published around 16:00 Central European Time on working days.

Currencies held at a fixed rate by their central bank, like the UAE dirham and the Saudi riyal, use that rate, the Colombian peso uses Colombia's official rate, the TRM, and every other currency uses the day's rate from Exchange Rate API.

No. Banks and card networks set their own rate and add fees, so what you pay or receive usually differs from the reference rate.

When a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, choosing the local currency usually gets you the better rate.

Once a day, on the days the European Central Bank publishes them.

On weekends and on its holidays there's no new rate, so the converter keeps the last one.

Some countries hold their currency at a fixed rate to another, and their central bank keeps it there.

The UAE dirham is held at 3.6725 to the US dollar, the Saudi riyal at 3.75, and the East Caribbean dollar at 2.70.

158 of them, from the Afghan afghani to the Zambian kwacha.

48 have an official rate: the euro, the 29 currencies the European Central Bank publishes against it, 15 held to the US dollar, and the Namibian dollar, the Cape Verdean escudo and the Colombian peso. The other 110 use Exchange Rate API's daily rates.

Up to 10 years, for the 48 currencies with an official rate.

Scrub the chart to see the rate on any day, and pick a range from a week to 10 years, or your own days in the calendar.
