This free salary to hourly calculator turns a yearly or monthly salary into what it pays an hour, a day and a week.

Add your real hours, paid weeks, overtime and tax, and it shows your true hourly rate, not just salary ÷ 2,080.

I built it because a salary hides what your time is worth. Two jobs with the same salary can pay very different hourly rates once the hours differ.

Here's the formula, a worked example, and the hours that change the answer.

key_takeaways.mdTL;DR

Key takeaways

Hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours a week × paid weeks a year).
At 40 hours and 52 weeks, that's salary ÷ 2,080: $60,000 a year is about $28.85 an hour.
A monthly salary × 12 gives the yearly figure first.
Longer hours lower your real hourly rate: $60,000 at 50 hours a week is about $23.08.
Tax comes off after, so take-home pay an hour is lower still.

What is a salary to hourly calculator?

A salary to hourly calculator turns a salary into the hourly rate it works out to.

It's for comparing a salaried job with an hourly one, or a job offer with freelance work.

How salary becomes hourly

The math is the salary divided by the hours you actually work in a year.

Turn a salary into hourly0/4

A worked example

Here's the example the calculator loads: $60,000 a year, 40 hours a week, 52 paid weeks.

$60,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour, or $230.77 a day over 5 days.

The hours that change the answer

The same salary pays less an hour the more you work.

Hours a weekHourly on $60,000
35$32.97
40$28.85
45$25.64
50$23.08

Mistakes to avoid

These are the slips that come up most.

  • Dividing by 2,080 when you really work more than 40 hours
  • Forgetting unpaid weeks between contracts
  • Comparing a pre-tax salary with take-home hourly pay

Who is the salary to hourly calculator for?

It's for anyone weighing a job offer, a raise or freelance work, and these tools help around it.

Know your hourly rate, and every offer gets easier to compare.
