This free book title generator gives you title ideas shaped like your genre's bestsellers.

It measured how 869 New York Times bestsellers are titled, genre by genre: how many words, how often they start with "The", and how many carry a subtitle. Then it tests any title you like against those numbers, against KDP's title rules, and against the books that already have it.

Here's what the bestsellers show, the rules KDP enforces, and how to test a title before you commit.

What is a book title generator?

A book title generator suggests titles for your book from what it's about, who it's for, and its genre.

Most generators mix random words. This one is told how your genre's bestsellers are actually titled, and every idea it gives you can be tested on the spot.

How bestsellers are titled, by genre

Fiction titles are short. In most fiction genres, the middle half of bestsellers use 2 or 3 words:

GenreTitle length (middle half)Start with "The"
Thriller2 to 3 words31%
Romance2 to 3 words29%
Fantasy2 to 4 words20%
Mystery and crime2 to 3 words21%
Historical fiction3 to 5 words47%

Mystery and crime titles carry a number more than most (23%), often a series count.

Nonfiction titles are just as short, and the subtitle does the explaining:

GenreWith a subtitleSubtitle length (middle half)
Business86%6 to 10 words
Politics84%5 to 10 words
Self-help71%6 to 10 words
Memoir and biography57%5 to 9 words

All 14 history bestsellers in the set have one, at 5 to 9 words.

KDP's title rules

KDP says the title field should hold only your book's actual title, as it appears on the cover. Its guidelines don't allow:

  • Sales rank words, like "bestselling"
  • Promotion words, like "free"
  • Repeated generic words, like "notebook" or "journal"
  • Unauthorized references to other books, authors or trademarks
  • HTML tags, or a title that's only punctuation

Your title and subtitle together must be fewer than 200 characters. The tester checks all of these except the references, which only you can judge.

Can you use a title that's taken?

Usually, yes. The US Copyright Office puts it plainly: "Copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases." Some can be protected as trademarks, like a series name.

A title another book has is still harder to find, so the tester looks it up on Open Library, and checks whether the .com has a DNS record.

Your title at search size

On Amazon's search page, shoppers see your cover and your title before anything else:

Self-help books in Amazon's search results: a cover at search size (1), and a title and subtitle cut to 3 lines (2)
  1. The cover at search size. The title on it has to read at this size.
  2. The title and subtitle, cut to 3 lines in this grid.

The tester draws your title on a cover at 3 sizes, so you can check it before you commit.

Book Title Generator FAQs

Questions about book titles? Here's what to know.

A book title generator suggests titles for a book from what it's about, who it's for and its genre.

This one is shaped by how New York Times bestsellers in that genre are titled.

Most New York Times bestsellers use 2 to 4 words in the title.

Thrillers and romance sit at 2 or 3 words, and nonfiction titles are as short, with a subtitle of about 6 to 10 words.

Yes.

The US Copyright Office says copyright does not protect titles, though some, like a series name, can be protected as trademarks.

A different title is still easier for readers to find.

KDP doesn't allow sales rank words like bestselling, promotion words like free, repeated generic words like notebook, HTML, or unauthorized references to other books, authors or trademarks.

Most nonfiction bestsellers have one: 86% of business, 71% of self-help and 57% of memoir bestsellers in the set carry a subtitle.
