Tell me what your site is about. I write domain names, check each one on up to 8 endings at once, and show the free ones first, with where to buy them for less.

A domain name is your address on the web, and the good short ones went years ago. Finding one that's free takes more guessing than it should.

This free domain name generator writes domain names for your site, checks every one on up to 8 endings at once, and shows the free ones first.

Each free domain comes with where to buy it for less, from each registrar's own price list.

Key takeaways

Type what your site is about and get 12 domain names at a time, each checked live.
Pick up to 8 endings, from .com to .ai, and see which are free for each name.
Names with a free .com come first, and you can hide the ones with nothing free.
Each free domain shows the cheapest first year and renewal at the registrars I read.

What is a domain name generator?

A domain name generator is a tool that writes domain name ideas for your site and checks which ones you can still register.

Mine asks each ending's registry directly, the same lookup the registrars use, so "free" comes from the people who run that ending.

A real example

Here's the Try example "budget travel blog" in the Brandable style, checked on .com, .co, .io, .ai, .net and .app. It took about 10 seconds for all 12 names:

tripfrugal
.com
Free
Free on
All 6 endings
explorift
.com
Free
Free on
5 endings, and .app likely free
trekspree
.com

.co, .io, .ai, .net and .app
wanderlite
.com

Free on
.io, .ai and .app
roamwise
.com

None of the 6

11 of the 12 names had a free ending, and 2 had a free .com. Only names with a free ending hides the ones like roamwise.

Under the list, tripfrugal.com showed $9.08 for the first year at Spaceship, against $10.46 a year at Cloudflare, from the prices I read on September 29, 2026.

What makes a good domain name

The best domains pass the radio test: someone hears it once and types it right.

  • Short – 5 to 12 letters is easy to remember and to type on a phone.
  • No hyphens or numbers – people forget the hyphen and don't know if it's "4" or "four".
  • Easy to spell – no doubled letter where 2 words meet, like brewwell.
  • Yours alone – never a famous brand, which can cost you the domain later.

A coined word is more likely to be free than 2 dictionary words, and it's easier to make into a brand.

Which ending should you pick?

People still type .com first, so get it when you can. When it's taken, the ending can still say something about your site:

EndingBest for
.comAnything, and what people type first
.ai, .ioAI and tech products
.dev, .appDeveloper tools and apps
.coStartups, when the .com is taken
.blogBlogs and writers
.shopOnline stores

A keyword in the domain won't lift your rankings much. Google's SEO starter guide says keywords in a domain name "have hardly any effect beyond appearing in breadcrumbs", so pick the name people remember.

How I check if a domain is free

For each name and ending, I ask that ending's registry with RDAP, the lookup that replaced WHOIS. For the few endings without it, I read their WHOIS, or their DNS as a last resort.

  • Free – the registry has no record of it.
  • Registered – someone has it.
  • Likely free – no registry lookup, and DNS says the name doesn't exist, so double-check at a registrar.

A registry can still hold a name back as premium or reserved, so the registrar's search has the last word.

Where to buy a domain for less

The same domain costs different amounts at each registrar, and the first year is often cheaper than every year after it. Here's the cheapest place for each popular ending, from 9 registrars' own price pages:

Prices are in US dollars, read between September 29, 2026 and October 2, 2026. Cloudflare, Spaceship, Porkbun, Namecheap and Hostinger include the ICANN fee, and Hover, DreamHost, GoDaddy and Squarespace are as their price pages list them.

A premium name costs more, and the registrar's search shows its price.

What a .com costs at each registrar

Two .com deals need a longer term: Hostinger's is $0.21 for the first year with a 3-year term, then $20.19 a year, and GoDaddy's is $0.01 for the first year with a 3-year purchase, then $22.99 a year.

GoDaddy also sells new customers a .com at $4.99 for 1 year, then $22.99 a year.

Over 3 years, Hostinger's deal comes to $40.59 and GoDaddy's to $45.99, against $29.44 at Spaceship and $31.38 at Cloudflare. So add up the renewals before you take a deal.

I keep my domains at Cloudflare. It sells at cost with no markup, so its renewal is one of the lowest for most endings.

When another registrar is cheaper for the first year, like Spaceship, I buy it there and move it to Cloudflare later. That's what works for me, so check the renewal price wherever you buy.

  • The 60 days – a domain can move to another registrar 60 days after you register it, an ICANN rule.
  • The move – moving a .com, .net or .org adds a year at the new registrar's price.
  • Cloudflare's DNS – a domain at Cloudflare uses Cloudflare's DNS.

Check the renewal price wherever you buy, since that's what you pay every year after the first.

After you pick a domain

Register it before you tell anyone, then claim the matching handles. The username checker checks one name on every platform at once.

For a name you already have, the domain availability checker checks it on 12 endings and the usual ways round a taken .com.

Who is the domain name generator for?

It's for anyone who needs a website address:

Pick the domain first, then the handles and the site follow.

Domain name generator FAQs

Questions about the domain name generator? Here's what to know.

A domain name generator is a tool that writes domain name ideas for your site.

This one checks every name on up to 8 endings live and shows the free ones first.

Type what your site is about, pick your endings and press Generate domains.

Names with a free .com come first, and you can hide the rest.

Hardly at all.

Google says keywords in a domain "have hardly any effect beyond appearing in breadcrumbs", so pick a name people remember.

Yes, when you can.

People forget the hyphen when they type, and the version without it may belong to someone else.

For most sites, yes, since people type .com first.

For AI and tech products, .ai and .io are well known too.

Wherever its first year and renewal are cheapest, both shown under each free domain.

I keep mine at Cloudflare, which sells at cost.

The ending has no public registry lookup, and its DNS says the name doesn't exist.

Double-check at a registrar before you count on it.

Not this one.

For names with a matching handle checked live, try the business name generator or the username generator.

No, I don't sell domains, and nothing you search is held or bought up.

The check goes to the registry, not a registrar.

Yes, it's free with no sign-up.

The AI names have a fair-use limit, and the domain checks cost nothing.
