How to check a username
How I check if a name is free
For GitHub, YouTube and TikTok, I read the profile page itself: a missing page means the name is free. For .com, I ask the registry that runs .com.
Instagram, Threads, X, Twitch and Reddit hide profiles from checkers, so their chip opens the profile page for you. If the page says it isn't there, the name is free.
What the results mean
- Free – the profile page doesn't exist, so you can register the name.
- Taken – someone has it.
- Breaks the rules – that platform won't accept the name, and the chip says why.
- Check – the platform hides profiles from checkers, so the chip opens the page for you.
