This free ICO to PNG converter takes every picture out of an ICO file and saves each one as a PNG, in your browser.
You see every size inside before you download, and each PNG keeps the icon's transparency, pixel for pixel. Nothing is uploaded.
Here's what's inside an ICO file, how the converter was tested, and how it compares with CloudConvert.
Key takeaways
What is an ICO to PNG converter?
An ICO to PNG converter opens an icon file and saves the pictures inside it as PNGs, which every app and website can use.
An ICO usually holds several sizes of the same icon. This converter gives you all of them, not just the first.
What's inside an ICO file
An ICO file holds several pictures of the same icon, one per size, and the program showing it picks the best one.
Each size under 256 px is a 32-bit bitmap with its transparency, like Google's, GitHub's and Python's favicons. The 256 px size is a PNG, which keeps the file small.
Every kind of ICO
ICO files made over the years store their pictures in different ways. The converter reads all of them:
- 32-bit bitmaps – full color with soft edges, the most common kind today.
- 4 and 8-bit bitmaps – 16 or 256 colors from a palette, in older icons like Wikipedia's.
- 1 and 24-bit bitmaps – with a mask for the see-through parts.
- PNGs – usually the 256 px size, saved exactly as they are.
A CUR cursor file is built the same way, so it opens too.
Tested on real favicons
I took the favicon.ico of seven sites on September 30, 2026: Google, GitHub, Apple, Mozilla, Python, Stack Overflow and Wikipedia.
The converter read all 21 pictures inside them, in Chrome and in Safari. Every pixel and every bit of transparency matched Pillow, the standard Python image library.
Compared with CloudConvert
I converted three of the same favicons with CloudConvert:
- This tool
- Yes, each pixel exact
- CloudConvert
- Yes, each pixel exact
- This tool
- By size, like python-48x48.png
- CloudConvert
- Numbered 1, 2 and 3
- This tool
- Shows each picture and its size
- CloudConvert
- Shows nothing
- This tool
- In your browser
- CloudConvert
- On its servers, after an upload
Both got every picture right. This converter names each PNG by its size, so you know which is which without opening them.
Pick the right size
Take the biggest picture inside for a new design, since it has the most detail.
For a favicon, the 32 or 48 px picture is the one browsers show. To make a new favicon set from a PNG, the favicon generator does the rest.
Nothing is uploaded
The converter runs in your browser, so your icons never leave your computer. There's no account and no limit.
Who is the ICO to PNG converter for?
It's for anyone who needs an icon as a normal picture:
- Favicon generator – site owners rebuilding a favicon from an old one
- PNG to SVG converter – designers turning an icon into vector shapes
- Image converter – anyone who needs the PNG as a JPG or WebP
- Image resizer – people who need the icon at a new size
Designers use it to get a client's old icon back when the original file is gone.
